I was interested in a three year old Ford Focus and ready to do a deal
until it comes to light that it has a 1.6 badge on the tailgate but a
1.8 engine under the bonnet. Otherwise the car looks and drives fine,
but ...

Comments, please?

Possibly a knackered engine that's been replaced with something a little
more gutsy?

What's the registration? It's easy enough to check to see what engine's
booked in.

Booked as a 1.8 blue Ford Focus LX that's been untaxed since 29th Dec 06.
The badge at the back is maybe from a replacement tailgate?

Yes, that's what I wondered, but they tell me it might have been
misbadged at the factory. A likely story???

Sounds a bit fishy. It may have been rear ended then repaired on the fly
(i.e not informing insurance). Check under the boot floor carpet for creases
in the metal or flaked paint. This will indicate if it's been smacked hard.
Does the paint tone seem concurrent when going round all the panels?

The 1.6 and the 1.8 are totally different engines; it wouldn't be an easy
swap..
