Corroded brake disks and MOT by Michael Chare
When my VW Passat was last serviced I was told that the front disks had corroded. This is true and there has been some corrosion at the edges. I have been reluctant to change the disks, as neither the disks or pads are near their wear limits, even after 45,000 miles and 5 years. The brakes work fine. However, the car is now due for its MOT, so my question is: Is the state of the disks an...

Lupo gearbox made of plasticene? by Brian
Daughter's 1.7 SDI Lupo, '99 (T), done all of about 80k miles. The box had to be repaired about 10k miles ago, (18 months back), and it's gone again. Now making a heavy whine on the overrun at low speed. this suddenly came on yesterday. The last time the fault was the roller bearing on the mainshaft disintigrating, made obvious when I dropped the oil out and several graunched-up rollers came out...

2003 Passat 2.0 20v Petrol cambelt replacement by David Chamberlin[_2_]
My VW stealership and the local independent are both insisting that I should have the cambelt replaced on my 2003 Passat 2.0 20v petrol at 60K miles. As this is a really expensive operation, I've checked both the handbook and the erWin repair manual, both of which state that the belt should be inspected annually from 60K miles, and replaced when worn, or at 120K miles whichever comes first....

Radiator hose clips. by Michael Chare
The radiator hoses on my 2003 2.0 petrol Passat are held onto the radiator outlets by steel bands. The bands look like they may have been pressed on and may be clamped afterwards. How are you supposed to remove the bands? Pushing them down the pipe is not going to be easy, If I try and cut them off I risk damaging the pipe. The bottom pipe is the main problem as I can easily undo the other...

Rear bushes + clutch MKIV golf by James[_2_]
I was informed on my last service that my rear bushes were on the way out. The place I used has now closed down for some reason. So I need to find another specialist. Anyways I was wondering how much I should expect to pay for the rear bushes to be changed ? Also the clutch is as high as everest so that will need changing aswell. Its not quite slipping but not exactly grabbing the gears if...

140PS TDi DSG Touran fuel consumption by Tim Downie
I realise that this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question but I'd like to know what kind of fuel consumption I should expect from my 2006 reg 140ps diesel DSG Touran. Currently I'm getting around the 40-42 mark, dipping under 40 on some tankfuls, occasionally reaching the dizzying heights of 43 on a long journey. I'm not partcularly leadfooted and even when I make an effort...

1.4 8v 2001 Polo cambelt change query by Bill
hi A relative has a 2001 Polo with 20k miles. It has the 1.4 8v engine. We're unclear whether the cam belt needs to be changed. The service log book just mentions renewing the belt every 60k miles. But I've read here and elsewhere that the plastic tensioner is prone to failure on 16v engines and perhaps the belt should be changed at 40k miles or 4 years.

I have a black GTI 2.0 2000 plate vw golf. I have had it through the summer and the a/c works well on cold but I have noticed now coming to the winter months that the interior heater will at best only blow out warm air and not hot. Golf '94 judder problem by Angus Manwaring
Hi all, Can any mechanical Merlins out there tell me what's gone wrong? :) My car has started juddering (missing?) quite badly in the last couple of days. Pulling away from a roundabout or going up a hill, and its pretty bad. Hills that I was able to roll up in 5th, now need 3rd, and I'm not a fast driver, this is just gentle driving. The car:

I'll be getting what I need from GSF, I see they have drilled brake discs are these any good never used them ?
