88' Scirocco 16v - How to take out of hibernation by Norbert
Recently bought a 1988 Scirocco 16v from a friend and the car had been sitting on his driveway for a couple of years although it ran quite well before he stored it. I want to prep up the car prior to getting her on the road however I'm hesitant to start the car before I do anything to it. Since I live in Canada the winters can be a little harsh and the car has only been started maybe twice a...

Brake questions by Chris
"Antony Gelberg" wrote in message ... Just reading through Haynes before fitting new rear calipers, discs and pads. Mk 2 Golf GTi. They suggest that the replacement caliper is topped up and bled off the car. Is this important? What's the point? Is it fairly easy to change the bearings at the same time? I...

passat tdi 1999 fishy smell and windows misting up by Roy Ticehurst
Suddenly started today after about 4 miles into 8 mile journey. Demister slow to clear and misted up again towards the end of the journey. The fishy smell seemed to go off or we got used to it! Checked that ventilation not set to re-circulate. On the return journey misting started almost at end of journey. Suggestions welcome. Roy Ticehurst

Golf 4motion: noise after engine turned off by Jim Walsh
Dear all, I'm not familiar with these cars, but the girlfriend is getting a 2002 reg, 32,000 mile Golf 4motion at the weekend. I went to see the car and noticed a whirring noise coming from the front of the engine bay after the engine was turned off. The seller said this was an oil cooler that runs for a few minutes, then shuts down. Just thought I'd check here to see if this is correct/...

Brake questions by Dave Hall
They suggest that the replacement caliper is topped up and bled off the car. Is this important? What's the point? Probably bleed easier with the car rear up in the air; never had a problem, and it can get messy fitting calipers full of fluid. I can't think why they suggest it, but haven't done rear calipers - just drum brake cylinders. -- Dave.

Horn not working - THE REAL POST :) by Dave Hall
Are you sure you have a horn relay? Many don't, unless there's a fancy horn fitted. I've had trouble with the sliding contact on the back of the steering wheel on similar-aged Polos. If you remove the steering wheel (24mm socket) you can try grounding the copper spring brush that makes contact with the brass ring on the back of the steering wheel with the ignition on to try to make the...

G11 coolant and LT35 by Bucket
Is is really necessary to use the G11 coolant they recommend in the VW handbook and Haynes book. The VW owners handbook says it has an additive to the gycol to prevent corrosion. I suspect they are just trying to sell their product? The non-brand antifreeze I've used this winter is Glycol/Ethhel mix and says on the can it contains anti corrosion additive. Jusy hoping its ok for my engine....

Grinding noise by Chris Bartram
Antony Gelberg wrote: If anybody has a clue about a pretty loud grinding / scraping noise, I'd like to hear it. Can't give much of a description but it's coming from the nearside (I think), it's only happens on the move, and it changes in pitch with speed. Mk2 Golf GTi. Stone caught behind brake disc? Really badly knackered wheel bearing?
