Grinding noise 96 Passat by
Phil L
I can't get to the bottom of this at all, my passenger side front wheel is
screeching and grinding, especially when I turn right (away from it) also,
while I'm going along it's making a horrid screech, almost like rubber on
metal but a slight right bend in the road makes it ten times louder, even
rolling (with the clutch depressed) it can be heard.
When jacked up the wheel can be spun with no...

Brake hose pain by
Dave Hall
Normal metric nut sizes, but as you say, corrosion city. You may find the steel
lines give up on you, as they are probably rusted tight to the union nut. My
son tried it while I was out of the country, and gave up before it became
undriveable, and took it to a garage.
Expect to change anything rusty anyway. Soak with plus-gas for a time. Not a
lot of room for manoeuvre really - physically or...

Hub cap pain by
Tod
I had exactly the same problem and ended up using the old caps again. I
can't think of any reason why a few dents matter, so long as there is a good
fit round the circumference.

Have just changed the rear brake discs and wheel bearings on my Mk2 Golf
GTi. I'm having problems installing the new hub caps. This wasn't
supposed to be the hard bit.
Haynes suggests using a drift for this, but surprisingly(!) I don't have
anything to fit that diameter. It...

It is to be expected :)
so far. Before I ruin the new caps and / or miss my MOT appointment at
12 tomorrow, any advice?

Electronic Handbrake by
R Slack
A friend has just bought a new Passat Estate.
He was unsure about the idea of an electronic handbrake, but a test drive
convinced him. However on his car he is finding that it doesn't always auto
release as he starts to drive away.
Does anyone have any experience of the system?

Leaving a car for 6 onths by
Will
I'm having to go away in the near future for up to 6 months.
I'm intending to keep my car on an open air site, under a car cover.
However I'd like some advice on what I need to do to make sure I still
have a useable car when I get back!
It's a Mk2 Golf.

Mk2 exhaust pipe by
Tod
Just got KwikFit to fit a new exhaust pipe (all but the downpipe) on my Mk2
Golf, but it's blowing at one of the middle joints. I took it back and they
said (after wiping a bit more paste over the hole) that it would improve (1)
as the pipe heated up, and (2) after about 100 miles. They said it would be
dangerous if it was 'too airtight', citing the example of a rear muffler
that...

88' Scirocco 16v - How to take out of hibernation by
Norbert
Recently bought a 1988 Scirocco 16v from a friend and the car had been
sitting on his driveway for a couple of years although it ran quite well
before he stored it. I want to prep up the car prior to getting her on the
road however I'm hesitant to start the car before I do anything to it. Since
I live in Canada the winters can be a little harsh and the car has only been
started maybe twice a...

They suggest that the replacement caliper is topped up and bled off the

passat tdi 1999 fishy smell and windows misting up by
Roy Ticehurst
Suddenly started today after about 4 miles into 8 mile journey. Demister
slow to clear and misted up again towards the end of the journey. The fishy
smell seemed to go off or we got used to it! Checked that ventilation not
set to re-circulate. On the return journey misting started almost at end of
journey.
Suggestions welcome.

Golf 4motion: noise after engine turned off by
Jim Walsh
Dear all, I'm not familiar with these cars, but the girlfriend is
getting a 2002 reg, 32,000 mile Golf 4motion at the weekend.
I went to see the car and noticed a whirring noise coming from the front
of the engine bay after the engine was turned off. The seller said this
was an oil cooler that runs for a few minutes, then shuts down. Just
thought I'd check here to see if this is correct/...

Probably bleed easier with the car rear up in the air; never had a problem, and
it can get messy fitting calipers full of fluid. I can't think why they suggest
it, but haven't done rear calipers - just drum brake cylinders.
