Hi I've got a Mk3 Golf Estate and the fan/blower has just stopped working. I've checked the 2 obvious / accessible fuses and they are fine. I'm assuming you mean the fifth gear housing when you say the clutch mech off. You will see the fifth gear cogs. You need to remove these. You have to undo the fith gear retaining bolt. The bolt is a 12mm spline socket or "triple square". Its torqued to about 150nm so its very tight.
