Passat questions by KotF
I've just bought a Passat 1.8 SE Estate - a major upgrade from my previous vehicle which had no electronic gizmos of any kind. I need to charge the battery - if I remove it will this affect the alarm/central locking or the radio (I have the code)? Can I actually lock the car with the battery removed? Probably dumb questions but this is all a bit new to me. KotF

Bilstein Streetline - any good? by RJH
I noticed the streetline kit on europarts for about £200, springs and shocks for a Golf 2 GTi. Anyone tried them? Any good? I didn't really want to lower the car, but 40mm doesn't seem too much unless it mucks up clearance. TIA Rob

Fire! by doddy
Hey My mate's 2000 Polo went on fire last night: http://www.alandodridge.co.uk/burnt/burn1.jpg He has no idea what caused it - just came back to the car and it was full of smoke. The car is just over warranty by 6 months. He's not sure if VW will admit fault and cover damages.

MkII Golf recall by JustinClarke
I was talking to someone a few days ago who asked if my GTI had been recalled years ago. Something to do with the heater matrix, I think. Ive only had the car for a few months and the previous owners have done some strange things so I have no idea whether they would have taken it back when this recall was announced. Can anyone help with info about what the recall involved. How can I tell if it...

1987 Jetta steering problem by K Hollingworth
Hi there! I own a 4sp 1987 Jetta 1.3 which has developed a bit of a problem with its steering. When you steer left, regardless of how much steering you put on there is a squeal which sounds like it comes from the left-hand wheel. I have also noticed a vibration which I think must be feeding back through the steering because my passenger didn't notice it. Any ideas? Is it likely to be...

Golf Mk2 auto starting problem by Onepercentf
Hello I would be grateful for any advice. My Golf Mk 2 Automatic sometimes (seems to be more often when it is hot) refuses to start. You turn the key, and think 'oh no, the battery is flat' but then realise all the lights have lit up ok. Turning the key does nothing, but go away for a while, come back, and it starts as if there was never a problem. Someone said I need a new starter motor,...

MK3 GTI won't Idle... AT ALL! by The Admiral
Hi people. Picture the scene.. g/f nicks my 1995 (MK3 ) 8V GTI as she's off on holiday with family 'up North'. It's been really reliable over the years and now she's got it... 300 miles away... she called me to say that it just won't idle. In order to start it you have to give it some wellie on the pedal, but as soon as you take your foot off, it dies. Now.. a bit of background. The car is...

Polo 1.4 CL Manual and Oil by Alex Hulse
Hi there I've just bought a Polo 1.4CL 1996 and it's a lovely little car! The only problem is that the manual has been lost, so I'm a little uncertain what kind of oil to pour into the blighter! Could someone look it up and tell me? Given the lost manual, does anyone know where I could get one? Or should I ask my VW dealer?

Golf - knocking noise by David Cawkwell
Having had a similar problem on a fiesta at about the same mileage. It's the lower ball joints. This probably means the steering is out and the car will pull to one side. "David Speir" wrote in message ... The car - a 1990 mk2 GTi 8V (110K)

MkII GTI leaking radiator by JustinClarke
My GTI has a coolant leak which seems to be coming from the radiator somewhere. All the hoses seem ok. My trusty Haynes manual makes it look pretty easy to change the radiator. Any advice from anyone who has done this would be gratefully received as would advice about where to find a replacement rad at a cheap price. Ta

1981 Rabbit (gas) won't start. HELP!! by Jay Orcutt
1981 rabbit 1.7 with cis would not restart after being shut off. It will turn over and sometimes attempt to start but will not continue to run. We have replaced the fuel pump, pump relay, fuel filter and coil to no avail. We have checked the fuel distributor and can only assume it's providing the fuel needed. We have also checked for vacuum leaks in the air intake tube between the fuel...
