Free Solex 2b2 carb. by Pete M
In the words of the least cheerful VW salvage yard bloke on earth "Dey're very rare, Dey are. Dey've all got dose ****ed up Pierburg tings on ... De Weber fits, but ain't got one o' dem eeder" My typical scrapyard question "so how much when you've got one? Either a Solex, a Weber or a Zenith will do, I think"

1991 Passat question... by ::jola::
david sillitoe wrote: Every dozen or so times I start the car (a '91 2.0GL Passat estate) it clears the data in the trip computer, the clock and the tripmeter. Any ideas as to why? Thanks... If it's anything like the new ones, it'll clear it after three hours of being switched off, just because that's how it does things. But the new ones have got two computers, one clears itself, the...

B5 Passat Tdi intermittent power loss by andy
B5 Passat TDI 110, 1998 car. A curious problem that has happened about 3 times (so far as I know!). I tow a caravan with our car, which obviously taxes the car a bit more than usual (although it 'tows' really well). The symptoms are that occasionally, the power drops - as though the engine has suddenly become a TDI 50bhp! The car stays in this state until the engine is switched off, this...

Which coolant by Dave Hall
Don't mix G11 and G12 - it goes brown and clogs things up, which is exactly why your book is so definite on what you should use. Don't use normal ethylene glycol. There is a new VW coolant which is OK for mixing with either - I think it may be called G12a. GSF sell G11 and G12 (maybe G12a) a bit cheaper than the main dealer, but I was surprised the dealer price wasn't as sky-high as usual. --

Which coolant by Chris Bartram
Oliver Walter wrote: This is about the 1.9 litre diesel engine in my recently acquired Skoda Felicia, which I think is a VW engine. The owner's manual warns of dire consequences if coolant is not topped up with the proper R12 coolant (red colour). Is this really something special, or can I use any ethylene glycol anti-freeze? TIA

Mk2 GTi Exhaust system by Pete M
My lovely ol' GTi 8v has the original single outlet type back box on, and it works, it gets rid of the gasses from the engine in a satisfactory manner. Problem is, it's a bit boomy on the motorway. 75-80 mph and it's bloody irritating, not particularly loud, just drones and is generally a bloody nuisance. So, here is my quandry, if I get a standard twin outlet back box do they drone less at...

my 89' jetta 1800 is running cold. especially when driving at high speeds. I suspect that the thermostat does not work anymore. Is this bad for the engine. I suppose it causes more wear on the engine?

Tappety Tappety Tap by Pete M
Dave Hall waffled on in a quite bewildering manner to produce... Is it a very high mileage engine? If so it may be due to 'fair wear and tear' rather than just something blocking the oil flowing to it. A set of tappets is a lot more than some flushing oil - trouble is, what else may the flush disturb? You wouldn't want a bearing oil-way to get clogged instead. I don't know if...

AFN Engine ECU de-immobilisation by Chris Bartram
Thomas Cowley wrote: I have a friend who's fitting an AFN engine (110bhp) into a Transporter Type 25. Someone I know said he might be able to get the ECU (which is matched to the key and immobiliser in the instrument binnacle) 'de-immobilised'. The ECU is essential in the AFN engine, as it controls the injection pump and a mechanical replacement is around 2000 Euros (!!!!)

The part number of the pump is 1EO 871 791 A all I need is the plastic reservoir dome on the end but I feel I may have to get the whole pump. coolant leak and hot engine by rog
Hello, my 1.8 16v corrado developed a coolant leak recently after having my tyres changed by some rather heavy handed tyre fitters. not a major leak, just slightly damp under the engine and a drop in coolant level. I took it to my local dealer who changed the water pump, mounting flange, thermostat and a few related gaskets. it is still leaking water but now the engine runs alot hotter. the oil...
