mk2 90 Golf - air selector controls by Rich ²°°³
The control that selects whether the air comes from the footwell, sides or windscreen got stuck the other day and then completely broke. Now the air only comes from the side vents and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how much this would cost to fix? I've looked behind the controls but could see anything obvious there, the wire that controls that part of the air flow is still connected...

After market alloy decides to leave car! by PSU Pete
This a long story, but a scary tale of woe for the unwary, as I was. Apologies. A couple of weeks ago, one of my alloy wheels tried to leave the car (96 Passat but irrelevant) . The wheel was an aftermarket alloy, of a type sold in motor stores as a package, including tyres for about £500. These cheap wheels are made with an oversize centre hole, presumably designed to fit all makes of car. They...

Help needed for sickly MkII GTI by Lz
HELP!! I have a MkII 8v and strange things are happening. I recently changed one of the hoses connected to the radiator. However I forgot to bleed the system after. My friendly VW dealer told me that all I need to do to bleed it is crank the heater up to full, take the top of the header tank and run the car til the fan kicks in. All seemed OK, there was air bubbling out the header tank. However...

Removing the CAT from a diesel by Khamelion
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is legal in the UK in regard to passing the MOT? I've read elsewhere that it can be done at no detriment to passing the MOT. Any thoughts Dave

Noise on New Polo by Kristof
Hi I noticed a weard noice on my new Polo. You can only hear it when the window is open (it's outside the car) and when you're driving along houses (because of the echo). It's like something is rattling... Anyone had this problem?

Golf IV sidelight bulb replacement by Tom Howe
I'm trying to change the side light bulb on a Golf mkIV. According to the Haynes manual it's a simple as pulling the bulb holder out and changing the bulb. Now I've tried pulling the holder out as instructed, first by hand then with pliers and it won't come out at all. What am I doing wrong, how do I remove the sidelight bulb holder? Tom

Wheel Covers by PSU Pete
Any body know where I can get a set of genuine (or acceptable copies) of VW wheel trims? I would like a set for my 96 Passat 14inch wheels. I have just had to go back to steel wheels after one of my alloys decided it wanted to leave the vehicle and totally wrecked itself. Can't get a replacement alloy wheel. (I'll start another thread on this one.) My local VW stealership wants £20 a trim....

98 Passat 1.8 T Turbo Bearing Seal Failure ? by JC
Have just bought a 98 Passat 1.8 Turbo SE (AEB Engine). Car drives very well but is suffering blue smoke at idle once warmed up. I thought this might be either valve guides/seals or rings but the smoke only appears to be when the car idles for more than a minute in traffic (then you get huge clouds of blue smoke - no exageration). I've tried all the usual tests (using engine braking downhill...

Problem with '85 Scirocco GTL by eifs
My '85 Scirocco GTL has problem's starting from cold. It goes up to 2,000 rpm and stays there either until the car's warmed up or I go under the bonnet and pinch one of the vacuum pipes to the thermal time valve. I'm assuming that it's either this valve or a leaking pipe that's causing the problem. Can anyone recommend a good place to get replacement parts? I've not had much look looking via...

New Polo build quality by Paul Giverin
I drove a Polo TDi hire car recently and was quite impressed. The engine was quite torquey as you'd expect and good for overtaking. My wife who doesn't like big cars was quite keen on it and I was wondering about getting one for her. But I did a bit of research and it seems that a lot of people think the build quality is poor. http://www.carsurvey.org/modelyear_Volkswagen_Polo_2002.html...

VW specialist in the North West by Aidan Whitehall
Anyone know of a VW specialist in the North West? I'm near Wigan... I need to find someone that can fix a n/s door that won't open without charging £80 just to diagnose the problem (as the garage that failed it's last MOT said they would do). Thanks --

MKII Gti Speedo problem by Lotusandy
1988 MKII Golf Gti 8Valve. When I last changed my oil in July I recorded my milage at 87661. I dont do much mileage these days, maybe 500 a month max I glanced at my speedo this morning & had to do several double takes, it was showing 108767! this would be 21106 miles difference when it should be maybe 2000 max. The speedo & odometer seem to be working ok, I want to sell the car quite soon, but...

Broken big bumper by Mark White
One of the side guides on the bumper cover of my Mk2 Gti has snapped resulting in the bumper drooping below the petrol filler cap. I have a new guide (191 807 377A) and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to replace the old one as the 4 plastic retaining points from the bumper cover going through the guide have been melted to fix it in place. Also, what is involved in removing the...
