MAF REVISITED by Richard
Thank you to all that responded. Let it be known that I have now bought and tried 3 different torq sets all with a hole up the middle. None fitted I have however got the MAF out by low cunning and adaptation, and it was spotlessly clean at 30K miles. Oh well! Treat it as a learning situation from which others may benefit.

Mk 3 Golf wierd electrical problem by Shabs
I have a 1994 VW golf and when i press the brake pedal the rear fog light indicator glows a little. This is the case if i put the car in reverse or use the indicators. Sometimes, as it did yesterday, the indicators in the dash would also glow a little when i press the brake pedal. This meant that if the indicator was used without pressing the brake it was fine, but as soon as i pressed the...

Air Con. A health Warning (and tip) by Coracle
Summer is here at last (well at least for this week it is) and we are all switching on that A/C button. In simple terms, Air conditioning works by letting compressed gas expand in a small radiator type device (called an evaporator) which sits in the airflow of the cars ventilation system. This expanding gas absorbs heat hence it cools. (just like an aerosol can does when you use it) A side...

timing belt tension by claire soulsby
It says in Haynes that the water pump should be turned anti-clockwise to increase tensioning on the timing belt. How? I can't make it move anywhere, although the cam belt does need to be tightened. Thanks, Chris

Golf 4 windscreen wipers by Phil
Just for information some time back i wrote about my windscreen wipers slowing down to a stop. the following day they were fine. I finally took the wiper linkage out to discover that the drivers side wiper pivot had seized almost solid. How they managed to move at all surprised. me. Fortuately i got to the fault before the motor burnt out. It cost £34.90 for the new pivot assembly. That includes...

FS: Mk1 Golf 1.1 project. by Mark S.
Before I stick it on Ebay is there anyone out there interested in a MK1 Golf (1.1 not Gti I'm afraid). If anyone wants more details let me know as I've not got them all to hand at the minute. Have some pics though. I took this Golf as it was on it's way to be scrapped and thought it a shame to see a shell/MK1 go to waste. I've got another car to work on so could do with passing this one onto

Scirocco MkII leaking heater matrix by John
I need to replace a leaking matrix on a Mk 2 Scirocco. The procedure in Haynes is to remove the centre consoles, then remove the heater housing, blower fan, and matrix as a complete unit. However, the matrix is just a slide fit into the housing, and it doesn't actually say that you need to remove everything if you only want to replace the matrix. Looking at the photo (40.5b on page 238, for...

Autotrans service time by Roy Hammond
What is the VW factory/shop work-time for a scheduled ATF, filter and gasket change on a 096 type (CNK code) automatic transmission? I've had quotes from some local VW dealers and specialists which vary from GBP95 to GBP208. The major difference must be the labour time... -Roy- (Surrey, England)

All Passats * made after 1996 are being recalled to have work done to the front axles, apparently they are dangerous....I've only had sketchy reports on BBC news24 and can't find any mention of it on the VW site - does anyone know the details of it? MK1 rear brake advice by Nick
Hi, Just failed the MOT on my 1990 MK1 Cabrio. The left hand rear brake is only working half as well as the right hand side. I've got the drum and shoes in front of me and need a second opinion! The shoes are only about 30% worn, the drum has a few minor scores in it but nothing drastic looking. I'll try rubbing down the drum and shoes with some Emery. There is no sign of leakage from the...
