Transporter/Caravelle engine swop by Graham
Hi, I hope this is the right newsgroup! I have fallen in love with the Caravelle/Transporter (1994ish on, slopy front shape) 8 seat minibus. Anyone got one for sale? I really want a diesel but I have come across a petrol (2.5) with engine trouble. Is it possible to change the engine to a diesel unit? Is this an easy swop or is there a lot of work to do with engine mountings, driveshafts,...

MkIII Golf Alarm & imobiliser - remote sender by Jeffrey Smith
I have a Mk III Vento 1994. There is an alarm/mobiliser fitted (by VW) but there was no key fob remote with the car when I bought it. I have spoken to Scorpion (makers of the alarm) about getting a new remote - but they say that the alarm is now discontinued and they can't provide a remote. They don't do a replacement alarm unit that fits with the existing wiring - and would only quote for a...

Wheel bearing or final drive or what? by toddi
Humming / droning noise, most noticeable at about 40mph, whether accelerating, decelerating or coasting. A bit like the whine of original Landrover tyres on smooth tarmac (but not as loud!). Continues same when slip into neutral. Does not seem to change when cornering left or right. Suddenly became noticeable about three days ago, but not *loud*. Trying to decide if it's front wheel bearing or...

VAG 1.9 SDI Engine Oil (VW Golf SDI / Seat Inca SDI etc) by AstraVanMan
Going to do an oil change before I sell the Inca, but don't quite get what specification oil to put in the thing. The handbook says the following: Multigrade oil with specification VW 505 00 (appropriate for Diesel engines, *except* engines with a pump injector). Multigrade oil with specification VW 505 01, *especially* for engines with a pump injector (also appropriate for all other diesel...

MK2 Golf Gti big bumper casing bracket by Mark White
Another blind hit and run motorist has pranged my rear bumper and snapped the top slide on the bracket thats attached to the bumper casing. A friend gave me one to attach to the front a while back, same problem, fixed with some self tappers and glue after instructions from a previous post. This time I don't have a spare bracket although they have a VW part number stamped on them, 191 807 377A....

Mk2 GTI performance by Rob
I've got an 88 8v GTI, 100,000 miles, had it about 2 years and generally very pleased with it. The other day I thought I'd test the performance (ahem, private road), and I couldn't manage better than 11s to 60, and 110 mph on the speedo, at 5500 rpm. This seems slow to me - although the car feels fine, and *feels* at least as quick as my last 2 sciroccos - although when I measured the last...

Oil in The Airbox by Rob C
Right..... My newer 92 driver is suffering the same prob as my older one. the air box is getting a lot of oil sucked/blown into it from the engine.this leads to the air filter cloggingand a miss fire and excessive fuel consumption. on the older car I just put a PiperX breather on the rocker cover, this lead to an oily whiff in the car. I want to keep this one standard, does anyone know how to...

Change final drive oil by toddi
Mk2 1.6 Golf 1989 automatic. Final drive gear oil is 'sealed for life'. (0.75 litres SAE 90) But mine's done 130k and I wish I had refreshed it earlier. I'm told some models have a filler hole but no drain hole. Mine does not seem to have either, bit it's difficult to see. May have to use speedo hole and suck out the old? Would like to inspect the sediment for debris (use magnet?). Where should...

Corrado VR6 Clutch Replacement by Alex Hopwood
I'm was going to the change the clutch and timing chain on my 95 VR6 Corrado and would be grateful for some advice on the following points: 1) Are there any odd nuts, bolts etc requiring special tools ? I assume the 12 point nuts on the clutch spring plate just require a standard 12 point socket ? 2) Bentley's manual seems to require the engine support tool when removing the starter motor, I can...

Re-connecting battery in Mk III Golf GTI causes hazards to flash by svbob
I've just come back having been out of the country for 6 months - to avoid any problems that might arise due to a decaying battery whilst I was away, I disconnected the battery before I left. I've recharged and reconnected the battery - first making sure that the ignition was switched on, as recommended in this group - only to be greeted by the hazard lights coming on of their own accord,...

Wheel aligners by Roy Hammond
I'm looking for a local firm who knows what they are doing and can carry out a wheel alignment on my 1994 Golf Mk3 Avantgarde (2litre cabriolet automatic). This morning I replaced both front strut bearings. I was surprised to find them both so very badly worn. There had been no obvious driving problems, except an occasional 'crack' noise when reversing under full lock. What really made me...
