Error code 0533 by Roy Hammond
96 Polo 1.4L (AEX) Motronic MP9 automatic. During my routine maintenance, carried out diagnostic check and found error code 00533. Both VWTool and VAG-COM displayed 00533 as " Idle Speed Regulation 09-10 - Adaptation Limit Surpassed - Intermittent". Car runs without any evident problem. Is this a common fault? What's the likely root cause? -Roy- (Surrey, England)

Mk1 Golf Cabrio Central Locking Problem by Gerry Scott
I have a '91 Mk1 Golf cabrio (Rivage) with intermittent central locking. Well, it was intermittent, recently it's become completely dead. I've always tried the central locking from outside, as you do, but the other day I happened to push down the door lock when I was inside the car. This made a quiet but noticeable "squeek" sort of noise from below/behind the dash, somewhere below the instrument...

Needlessly paying for information (speedways.co.uk) by Iain Miller
In case anyone else was considering paying £5 to download instructions for changing a B5 cambelt (or on a range of other procedures) from www.speedways.co.uk as I did (fool be me)...... you might try having a look at http://volkswagen.msk.ru/ first where you can download (for free) the exact same document I paid for and a range of others. Alternatvely have a look at the forums on...

Mk IV Immobiliser by Nick
Is there any way to permanently disable the immobiliser? I'm sick of the thing staying immobilised when I try to start the car. Sometimes I have to reinsert the key 20 times before I can start it. Obviously I want to retain the central locking. TIA Nick

Cambelt change on 98 Passat 1.8T by Iain Miller
My Passat has done about 68K miles & I'm considering changing the cambelt & tensioners this year (in order to pre-empt known issues of failed tensioners, belt hops off, 20 bent valves etc). Whilst I could just chuck it at VW (or an independant) to sort it out I'm considering doing it myself to save some cash. I don't do a lot of work on cars these days but I know my way around an engine - the...

VW Golf tailgate window removal and fitting - help needed! by Rob
Hi, ive got a rust problem on my MK3 Golf in the typical place most MK3's get it, in the bottom corners of the tailgate window. So I want to sort the rust before it gets too bad and will need to take out the window to get at it properly. I looked in the workshop manual and it was useless. Supposedly this job is too hard to do at home and it recommends you get it done by a professional due to the...

Auto transmission service by Roy Hammond
According to the original service schedule, my VW 1994 Golf Mk3 automatic 096 transmission should be serviced (4L of fluid replaced and filter changed) every 40,000 miles. It's now due and I plan to do it myself. However my local VW agent (Whites) when I enquired about the availability of the replacement filters and gaskets, says they never do that service - they only ever check for leaks and...

93 golf misfire - what am i missing by kembers
Ive got a 93 1.8 Golf. Its the one with an ABS engine, single point fuel injection. Now, its got a regular misfire on number 4 cylinder. Its got new HT leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap and theres definitely a spark at the plug and the leads are in the right order. So I think 'it must be fuel then' but its a single injector. What am i missing? The only thing i can think of is that the inlet...

Engine dies 1986 VW Polo Fox Coupe by nj
Hi, the car starts but no power seems to get to the engine no matter how much I push down the accelerator. The engine soon cuts out and dies. I have checked the air intake and it seems fine, I am thinking it may be a fuel flow problem but am not too sure? Has anyone got any ideas? The car only passed it's MOT last week! Cheers

Recommended manual for 1991 Golf? by zoara
Just bought a dead cheap 1991 Golf so wasn't very surprised when it decided it wouldn't start any more. I'm familiar (though not an expert) with Beetles - the aircooled ones - but have no idea of where to start with more modern cars. I'm after a manual that gives orientation and basic concepts in an easy-to-follow style; what sits where and why, and how to troubleshoot problems. Is there...

I was talking to a friend today and he told me GTi's had bee sting aerials and if the aerial is mounted on the wing then its a replica and not the real thing? True or false? Thanks!

Hi Thank you for taking the time to read this. I own a '95 mk3 gti - I do not know what some things are in my boot on the near side. I wonder if someone might take a look at the photos I have taken and identify what the thins are. (I have circled them with green).

Golf Mk4 - How to remove centre console by banzai
Anybody have any links / details for the above. I need to gain access to the rear of the stereo (more so than just pulling the stereo out) so that I can remove the control unit for a mobile phone hands free car kit. TIA
