Mk2 Golf warm up problem by kevinrendall
Hi, and thanks in advance for any anticipated assistance :-) I have an 87 Mk2 Golf GTi. It runs well apart from a problem when warming up. Start up from cold runs the engine at around 2000rpm (too high?). Once the oil temp gets to abt 50C revs come down to abt 1000rpm. However, as the engine warms up the revs drop when the engine is idling and the car cuts out. This continues between abt 55 and...

BORA 115PD cambelt by pacc
Its fast approaching it's 80,000 mile cambelt change. I've changed many cambelts in the past but when I read the Haynes book it scared me to death. Special tools, two sets of feeler gauges, and re set-up on a computer........?? I enquired at the VW dealer and they want an incredible £300 just to change the belt. What's it made of Gold? Anyone know why its so expensive at the dealer? Anyone know...

TDi oil level vs efficiency by chris
Hi Group, My Passat TDi (110bhp) seems to be smoother on acceleration and give better MPG when engine oil level is between 60 - 80% as shown on the dip stick, when I top it up to the max point (100%), it seems not as efficient and give less MPG, around 8MPG loss! I just can't explain it. Does anyone has the same experience?

Brakes by Jeff Dyer
I've just been working on my Mk1 Golf for the MOT. The rubber bush that protects thr rubber brake pipe on the front strut is missing on one side and the pipe is *very* slightly worn. A simple problem one would think BUT I've just noticed that the bleed nipple has been broken off. I (guiltily) can't remember when I last bled the brakes but obviously I can't fit a new pipe unless I can bleed the...

Broken Locking Wheel Nut Key by Alex Hopwood
The car was in the local VW garage the other day when they had one of the front wheels off. Subsequent to this I tried to remove the wheel in question and, lo and behold, found the normal non locking wheel bolts very tight, then promptly broke the locking wheel bolt key trying to get the bolt out. Has anyone else had the same problem and know how big a problem it is to get the broken bolt out....

GTI smokey on idle by Phatman
Hi, was sitting at the lights yesterday when I noticed a cloud of blue smoke drift past, assuming it was some clapped out Ford behind me I was alarmed to see it was coming from my exhaust! Driving around today it's been fine no smoke at all, although the exhaust fumes have a very faint whiff of burning oil. So, I was wondering whether oil could be getting into the inlet manifold, maybe from the...

Inner CV joint bolt question. by marc
Hi All, Has anybody bought the tool to remove these bolts? If so can you remember what size it is? My guess was an 8mm 12 point ( not so much a guess - i counted them ) internal spline. Am I correct and just as important - anyone know the cheapest place to get it ( I'm based in Newcastle ). Thanks Marc

Passat Alarm - Wet ECU by Michael Chare
On Passats there is an ECU located under the carpet of the front passenger side foot well which controls the locking, alarms etc.. There is a known problem where the car leaks water, this ECU becomes wet and triggers the alarm randomly. Does any one happen to know exactly how the water normally gets into the car? Michael Chare

Exhaust Gas odor by VW Golf Cart
OK, ever since I've had this damn car, I've had this bad Gas/unburnt exhaust smell in the car. Always smells, especially when the car is warm, Windows open or closed, heater fan on or not, high RPM or low RPM.... I've tried many things. Changed exhaust Manifold (old one was cracked), fixed all exhaust leaks, changed air filter, changed plugs, new 1 wire Oxygen Sensor, etc.... I've brought it...
