Default golf mk2 stalling

My mk2 1.8 has been stalling. Usually it's when I'm in town and have
to stop quickly. I put in the clutch and the revs drop to zero. It
always starts right back up. It doesn't happen all the time. Every
once and awhile the revs drop to zero then it bounces up to 2500,
then
normal idle. It's a 90 with about 155000 miles. Otherwise runs
strong and has a fairly recent timing belt, plugs, cap, etc. Can
anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

also meant to add the hall sender can be located under the dust cap in the
distributer.

Sorry, I don't know what the ISV is. Could you elaborate?

That would be idle stabilisation valve.

Pity this is a GTI, I had a suggestion lined up if it had a 2e2 carb :-)

There's a little idle air hole on the throttle body that gunges up. Get
it cleared out and it'll be ok. Probably.

Mine was always the grommet between the cam cover & the breather filter
on the top, perished and had an air leak. Original lasted years, had to
put a new one (£2 from dealers) on every yr or so after original failed.
