Can modern direct injection diesel engines run on vegetable oil ?

I read a Golf Plus brochure the other night. It indicated that the diesel
engine can only run on normal diesel fuel.

My old 97' Sharan TDI seems to run better with 5% to 20% SVO depending on
temperature.

Does anyone have any views on this subject ?

I'm pretty sure that Revenues & Customs will have very strong views on the
subject if you don't pay duty on your additives!

The Golf brochure is warning that VW diesel engines do not take kindly to
Biodiesel.

The PD engines don't seem to take to it well. People have done it with
Skodas, but there's mixed results.

The older, non PDs are generally thought to be OK on veg oil.

I've tried recycled chip fat in our relatively unrefined Citroen ZX, from
the local biodiesel pump. Even mixed with about 10% diesel, it runs like
crap and misfires on starting for a good while. Once warm it's just about
bearable... I'm switching back to diesel.

Reminds me of the petrol shortage back in 73. If you weren't around then you
should know that there were huge hour long queues at the garages and
sometime you couldn't get a full tank anyway. It was then that I discovered
that my mini would run on three quarters petrol and one quarter paraffin. It
was that or walk lots. Of course when I say, "run", what I mean is "sort
of". And then only with the choke full out. Plus it left the street smelling
like a badly adjusted giant hurricane lamp had just been through.

This is all true, whatever that means.

As long as you don't use more than 2500 litres you don't have to pay any tax
on it.

I'm pretty sure (like 100%) that they won't give a **** as you are now
allowed to use up to 2500 litres a year without paying duty.

I run my Xantia TD on 100% veg at the moment. It can take two goes to start
when it's really cold, other than that it performs better and more
economically than diesel.

www.dieselveg.com will tell you more.

That's odd. Maybe it's **** fuel? I've ran 3 ZXs a Xantia and 2 XMs on the
stuff - but all new oil, and they've all loved it.

God knows, but it's £5 a tank cheaper than diesel. I'm going to run it at
75% veg oil, 25% derv I reckon...

From www.dieselveg.com

Maximum allowable veg oil usage in Litres before having to register or pay fuel duty to UK Revenue & Customs is set at 2500 Litres Per Year, below you can see how many miles or kilometres this equates to when compared to your vehicles Miles Per Gallon

Miles you can run on veg oil before you have to
register or pay duty:____10,998_13,748_16,498_19,247_21,997_24,747 _27,496_30,246_32,995
Average Miles Per Gallon:____20_____25_____30_____35_____40_____45__ ___50_____55_____60

--------------
For the average 10,000 miles per year driver you shouldn't need to pay duty it seems.
