Default CD/radio code unknown - but working OK

We have a Volkswagen Passat 2.0 litre sport (petrol, 2002) which has
what I believe are the original CD/radio (mutli-changer takes about 5
CDs). We bought this used and don't know the code for the radio. Whilst
it works OK now, clearly removing power from the battery would cause
problems. Would a VW dealer be able to supply the code? The car is
registered in my wifes name.

If it's a Gamma or Beta unit then a dealer may be able to get the code but I
believe they'll need to see the car as they also need the serial number off
the unit. Probably need it for security too as they may want to see proof of
ownership.

If it isn't a VW unit then you may still be able to get the code from the
manufacturer.

I think these radio "re-learn" themselves if disconnected. If you
disconnect the power when it's put back on, take it for a short drive
and it will pick it back up.

may be wrong though

Does that not defeat the whole point of this - a security measure? Or is
there some communication with a computer in the car, such that it knows
whether its the same car or not?

Yes it's paired with the car.

My Gamma head unit was fine (in the same car) after it had lost power. I
didn`t try turning it on right away, but the following day I got in the car,
started the engine and turned the radio on as normal, and it worked straight
away.
