Hi all, I've just got this Golf Mk 4 TDI SE 100 which was quite a big purchase for me, and so forgive my excitement. I feel a bit of a traitor getting rid of the '94 Mk 3 which has been a good friend, but I think it was the sensible thing to do, with the leaking crank case seal and so on. Anyway, all seems well so far (touch wood) but the stereo is pretty much stuffed. The only real sound comes from the driver's door speaker, I can get a little out of the passenger door (a bit distorted) and nothing out of the rear speakers. My stepson had a look this afternoon and was surprised that although there are 4 pairs of wires leaving the stereo, they plug into a connector from which only 2 pairs emerge. He wondered if that was normal or if there was a hidden manual fader like the little joystick I used to have in my Escort ........sigh. Any ideas what might be going on here? Another quick question, I only got the one key with the car, a rectangular remote with a spring loaded metal key, and being a bit worried about relying on batteries, I wondered: Can you centrally lock and unlock purely mechanically (I haven't managed it yet)? And is a spare (mechanical) key, presumably from VW, frighteningly expensive? Thanks for any thoughts. Cheers. All the best, Angus Manwaring. You got no rear doorspeakers and there are no wires , buy a speaker kit from the dealer it got all the wires and bits and pieces you need to look it professional for about 75 euros -- Arrie Performance Bikes: The Navigator eats corners and spits out rocks afterwards |

Does the wiring look original (2 ISO connectors (http://www.nexxia.co.uk/Car_Stereo_f...Connectors.htm, look at PC3-08)? have the rear speakers been robbed? There's no seperate fader control as standard. It's all done in the stereo- probably a VW Beta or Gamma as standard. Any ideas what might be going on here? Maybe there's a connector dropped off? Maybe someone's hacked it about a bit to fit an aftermarket head unit. Another quick question, I only got the one key with the car, a rectangular remote with a spring loaded metal key, and being a bit worried about relying on batteries, I wondered: Can you centrally lock and unlock purely mechanically (I haven't managed it yet)? Yes. And is a spare (mechanical) key, presumably from VW, frighteningly expensive? From VW or an auto locksmith, at least £90 IME. It has an immobiliser chip that needs programming to the dash ECU if you want to start the car with it, which seems desireable ;-). |

I hadn't though of that. To the untrained eye, (mine) it has got speakers. Its got the circular meshes in the back doors, with a kind of hex pattern in there if you look at the right angle and tweeters above that near the opening lever handles. Your saying these are all empty? I hope not! ![]() All the best, Angus Manwaring. There's no seperate fader control as standard. It's all done in the stereo- probably a VW Beta or Gamma as standard. We don't think its original, it a Sony with lots of horrible lights. If it was the stereo that was broken I'd happily buy another for 75 quid, but it seems the problem is the with the passenger door speaker and the (nonexistent?) rear speakers. So its going to probably need some fiddling around with - not my strong point. ![]() My stepson is kindly coming over for another look and we'll look at that webpage. Yes indeed. ![]() Somebody has very kindly offered me his old key, but I'd need to get it recoded an rebladed - would that be a significant saving do you reckon? All the best, Angus Manwaring. Simple enough reason enough Steve the gamma is not a totally crap HU its just a bit weak chucking out a poor figures. So for someone who required a bit better quality sound they change HU, in this case someone mucked it up. To OP: Once you have it all sorted I suggest a nice Becker HU or if you want something a bit more flash an Alpine HU, the beckers IMO look a lot of factory and have good features. Get some new speakers ... if you going to get and amp make sure you amp the speakers from new. |

So for someone who required a bit better quality sound they change HU, in this case someone mucked it up. Personally, I found the Gamma to be absolutely fine. Plenty loud enough, easy to use and, most importantly, understated, so it never attracted unwanted attention. Conveniently, it was a cassette HU, too, which made iPod connection much easier. I wish I had a Gamma in my B6 - the B6 head unit is nowhere near as good. -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - Hongdou GY200 - Alfa 75 TSpark Alfa 156 TSpark - B6 Passat 2.0TDI SE - COSOC KOTL BOTAFOT #87 - BOTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC # |
