Hi all,

Is it the original stereo? Does the wiring look original (2 ISO
connectors
(http://www.nexxia.co.uk/Car_Stereo_f...Connectors.htm,
look at PC3-08)? have the rear speakers been robbed?

Yes, and no.

There are no rear speakers and apparently never were - s I'm wondering if
it really is an SE. How do I tell for sure?

We fitted a new pair of front speakers today, so I have some decent sound,
in the front at least.

From VW or an auto locksmith, at least £90 IME. It has an immobiliser
chip that needs programming to the dash ECU if you want to start the car
with it, which seems desireable ;-).

I'm getting a bit confused here. :-/

Is the immobiliser chip the same as the transponder, and can you program
it yourself using the car and an original key, or does it need to go to a
specialist?

If I get a remote fob from another Golf, can I save myself some money by
getting a new key cut for it?

Thanks for all the help, chaps.

Hi all,

Eurgh!

Sounds like someone has bodged the head unit swap.

Given that an SE would have been fitted with a VW Gamma as standard, I
don't see why they'd change it in the first place.

Could be they were accustomed to the original unit, and just shoved in
another handy unit when they sold the car.

To OP: Once you have it all sorted I suggest a nice Becker HU or if you want
something a bit more flash an Alpine HU, the beckers IMO look a lot of
factory and have good features. Get some new speakers ... if you going to
get and amp make sure you amp the speakers from new.

Thanks, I'm afraid we just dashed down to Halford's and picked up a pair
of FLI(?) speakers for 30 quid. I suspect they are going to sound better
than what I'm used to in my Mk 3, even though VW saw fit to grace that
particular machine with rear speakers.

You can't do that with a Gamma (or Beta), as they're coded to the car.

The transponder is in the key and is read by a receiver around the
ignition barrel.

You need to hook the car up to diagnostic kit to program it to accept a
'new' key.

Thanks for all the help, chaps.

There's lots of opportunity to get confused :-). There are 3 components
to the full key: an immobiliser chip/transponder, the key blade, and the
remote control for the locking. A non-remote key still has the
transponder. If you start a car with a key without a transponder or with
one not coded, the car will typically start and then stop again very
quickly.

You can program the remote yourself using the key you have. You can get
anyone to cut a key blade. The immobiliser chip/transponder is the hard
bit. Like Steve says, that needs coding with diag equipment.

Lower spec than SE does not have: rear head restraints, multifunction
computer (single & total journey times, fuel consumption etc), 8 speakers,
front cup holders, driver's seat hight adjustable, storage nets on back of
front seats, 12v socket in boot

In addition, if it has no A/C then it should have a sunroof, seat material
is a series of squares made up of four bars
