i have one of these with high mileage, 227k. still going well though,
starts every time, carb seems fine. probably coz its only had one long
term owner and was looked after. i worked the mpg out a few times, and
driving round town i only got 26mpg. a bit of both and i got 31mpg.
being careful and driving a roads at 50/60 most of the time i got
34.5mpg. still not great though, as i remember an early 8v gti getting
40/41mpg quite easily.

the car is clean and i'm sure would do plenty more miles but i am
considering buying a lower mileage mk2 such as a gti which i can
really look after and expect to keep long term.

Nah, I had a Mk2 GTi a few years ago that was still rather brilliant at 260k
miles.
