Default Alpine Stereo in a 1996 Polo

Hello there - I was going to replace my standard Sony Radio/Cassette with an
Alpine cd changer. I got the old one out using the removal keys, connected
up the Alpine (it had compatible plugs) but found it only to work with the
ignition OFF! Basically it works with one turn of the key but not when
engine running.
I put back the original Sony head and found it to do exactly the same! Have
checked the radio fuse and all seems ok. I am mystified.

Does anyone have any clue before I take it to the garage? Much appreciated.

Certainly they are often wired backwards to convention in many VWs (and
Vauxhalls, AIUI). Most modern radios have a reversible connector in the
loom to accomodate this.
