Default 2007 Passat Tow Electrics

When I ordered a new style Passat I got the VW dealer to fit the
towbar with the official and expensive VW (13 pin) electrics.

I find that the tow electrics only work when the ignition key is in
and depressed (switched on). The dealer insists that is how it should
work but I am not convinced. Because of the way it is wired we could
not use the parking lights or hazard warning lights unless we levae
the key in and switched on!

So VW seem to expect us to leave it without trailer lights on or leave
the vehicle not only unsecured but with the key in!!!

Has anyone else had similar experiences with VW or other makes of tow
car?
