Oh Doom and Gloom!
I have a 06 Passat TDI with DSG.
Sounds as if I may have 'interesting' times ahead of me.
Put it this way, since I posted that my Mk2 GTi was pretty much
fine it's wrecked two cylinders and now needs major surgery, and
just to join in the air flow meter on the A6 V6 TDi I'm using has
packed in as well. Not bad for a week.

touches wood

Every time someone tells me not to touch a car with a bargepole 'cos
it'll be an unreliable money pit, I seem to end up with a faultless
example.

Obviously, I'll blow the turbo seals on the Passat tomorrow morning
after saying that.

No, that would only happen if it was yours, not a company car :-).

Oooops

I have a V6 2.5 TDi Passat, and the air flow meter is giving some
burps, and making the turbo complain.

Anyone know of a cheap source of air flow meters?

I was quoted £65+ vat at GSF for one, I think that's possibly the retail
price though. Luckily while I was there a trade mate of mine wandered in and
ordered the exact one I need for a A6 V6 TDi he's got in with a similar
problem so I'll pop round to his on Monday and see if it'll cure the fault
before he finishes the jobs on the one he's got in. If it cures it I know
what to buy, if not, I've saved myself the money.

Cheap ones can be had off ebay, GSF or ECP, but I'd go for genuine Bosch
from ECP or GSF.

Quite probably.

My experience of late model VAG stuff has pretty much been horrendous.
I know a chap with an A6 V6 TDi that no-one has been able to fix in
the last 6 months, it's been to 3 VAG stealerships and two diesel
specialists so far and is still pretty much undriveable (less
acceleration than a double decker bus), Mk4 Golfs seem to be almost
reliable, Mk5's are truly woeful.

Whereas my Mk2 GTi is still pretty much fine. :-)

Sorry, I'll chime in here in suppport of the 5 (again)

I've found it to be far more reliable than my 4's in particular my ('00)
1.6 (Wolfsburg)

Prior to buying my 5 I read a lot on this NG in, particular, about how bad
the 5 was, but that does not seem to stack up here in Antipodea...

I know quite a few 5 owners and we all seem to be happy with reliability /
build quality etc.

The 5 was released in Oz about a year and a bit after the UK... is it
possible this was enough time for the VW white coats to sort the sh*t out?
