Default Passat Estate Rear Wiper problem

I have a 2001 TDi estate. I noticed recently that the rear wiper seemed to
be running slow.
Now it has stopped completely. Any advice from those who have been there,
before I get the screwdrivers out??

If the wiper is running slow/stopped then I'd suggest a seized wiper
mechanism, the bit that connects the wiper arm through the bodywork, happens
all the time on the front wipers of Mk IV Golfs!
The wiper arm needs removing, the mech' needs taking out and the shaft
removed from its bore, cleaning, re-greasing and replacing.
Had to do front wipers on son's A3, not too hard a task... except when it's
raining!!

Not much you can do other than replace it.
It is a single assembly.
It probably got washer water in it at sometime

If it's the usual VAG rear wiper, there is no seperate mechanism. It's
all in one casing with the motor. They are somewhat prone to failure-
the washer jet leaks and corrodes the pipework inside. Sometimes the
motor fails as well (my A3 one did, and our Lupo is going the same way).
Sometimes the washer jet seizes in place and turns with the wiper.

On Golf IV, this often soaks the tailgate latch, knackering the switch
inside for the boot open warning and the boot lamp.

There's some info he
http://www.golfmk4.co.uk/rear_screen_washer_repair.htm

for the seized washer, there's a repair kit available from dealers. I
ended up buying a new motor for my A3: about 60 quid from ECP.
