Default Electronic Handbrake

A friend has just bought a new Passat Estate.
He was unsure about the idea of an electronic handbrake, but a test drive
convinced him. However on his car he is finding that it doesn't always auto
release as he starts to drive away.
Does anyone have any experience of the system?
Robert

Read Paul Harris write up in VW Driver mag about his experience driving
across France with the new Passat and that handbrake, he say's he felt like
a rookie driver again where the car stalled so much! There's an option when
bought new that stops the car rolling back when the handbrake is released,
not sure if its 'retro fittable' tho.
I think you have to have your foot on the footbrake whilst releasing the
handbrake, which obviously makes hillstarts awkward.
I'm sure its just 'getting the knack' and after a few weeks he'll be an
expert?!?

Thanks Andy.
He does have the option you mention, which works but I don't think it's
designed to be left on all the time.
Do you happen to know when the item you mention appeared in VW Driver?
Regards,
Robert

It seems the problem with auto releasing the handbrake, was sometimes not
quite fully depressing the clutch, before engaging gear.
