get a MRK IV and dont look back lol
essexgirl "Neil Jowsey" wrote in message 8... I've had a MKII 1.6 Petrol Driver for years and been more than happy with it's reliability, performance, MPG etc etc. But it's now 15 years old and it's time for a change. I've had a go in a 1.6 MKIII GL. Electric everything, PAS, airbags, good performance the works but I'm disappointed with the handling :-( The PAS doesn't give you much feedback and the suspension is really soft. It is (IMHO) a pretty un-involving drive and it seems to wallow into corners like a small barge. Are they all like this? Don't get me wrong, in a straight line it does give a wonderfully smooth ride that's far better than the MKII, but cornering and poorly weighted PAS is a let down for me. The dampers seem OK so I'm putting the handling down to the soft suspension. I'd be tempted to fit some slightly stiffer springs to sharpen things up a bit but I've only seen lowering springs (and I don't want to lower the car, this is not 'Pimp my ride' :-). Does anyone have any suggestions? N |

I'll raise you one.... Get a Mark V and don't look back. Bill I take it then that 'They all do that sir' :-( I'm sure the later MKs are much better, but are more expensive. Just wondering what, if anything, could be done to make the MKIII 'more fun' to drive. N. |

A MKIII 16v GTI is fabulous fun and the lattter ones have as many BHP as the MKIV 1.8 T (150BHP) £3500 will get you quite a nice one. I've had mine for 2 years and not a single problem. Just make sure you get to listen to it start up from cold as the hydraulic tappets can play a drumrole if the oil hasn't been changed regularly |

Oddly I have a MK5 gti and my current insurer would not insure me for a MK2 gti |
