Default Golf 4 wiper mechanism

On my 1999 mk4 golf tdi, the windscreen wipers have suddenly got so slow,
that they are hardly able to return to the 'home' position when wiping!
I'm hoping that the mechanism might just need greasing underneath the
scuttle panel at the base of the windscreen? Does anyone know if this is
possible to get at?

Has anyone done this before, and did it make any difference?

Many thanks for any replies!!

Joe

Big caution here....

If you manage to get to this position be sure to keep your fingers out of
the way if you turn the wipers on! I nearly lost a bunch of them once when
struggling to reach up inside the scuttle and accidentally hit the wiper
switch.

Good point!!!!
Were you trying to fix the wipers when this happened? Did it work?

Yes, but it wasn't on a VW, I seem to remember it was a Ford of some sort.
The wipers stopped reaching across the whole screen and seemed to hit a dead
point some way into their travel. It turned out to be a siezed up "bearing"
between two of the actuator arms up behind the scuttle. On that model they
could be popped apart and greased and then re-assembled.

Thanks for the reply - that sounds like it could be the problem! If you
changed it in 40 mins, it must have been fairly easy to do?

Common golf problem. if you get the mechanism out, you can normally clean it
up and relube it, will be as good as new (well nearly new!)

I had this problem on my mk4. It was a bush on the mechanism seized. I found
the wiper arms were that difficult to remove I had to make a tool to pull
them off.
How the motor had managed to to move the wipers was a miracle. There was no
way that this bush was ever going to run again. It did in fact take me quite
some time to cure the problem.
Good luck with the job, you need the wipers working properly at this time of
the year.
Phil.
