Hi, im consindering changing the engine in my mk2 Gti in May 2006 but cant
decide which one to go for! It'll either be the 1.8T or the VR6. I think the newer, lighter 1.8T would be better. I'd appreciate your oppinions? Thanks. |

I'd appreciate your oppinions? Thanks. I think it was generally accepted the the VR6 marvel that is was, was still too damn heavy for the mk2 [1], that big lump over the front wheels chucked the balance out and getting decent suspension for it is tricky. Course the vr still sounds gorgeous so I'd still find it a tempting conversion myself for the noise (if I had the money I'd have the R32 conversion that JBS does in a shot). I think the 1.8T can offer you a lot more power from an engine with a weight better suited to the mk2, think theres also a bit more room to play under the engine bay than with the vr6. But you'll sound just like every other turbo car on the planet. Me I'd go VR6, yeah the 1.8T gives more power, better weight. But the creamy VR6 on a sports zorst is gorgeous, stands out, smoother power delivery. Either way unless you are lucky with your choice of suspension [2] you will be limited on the number of roads you can take full advantage anyway the the weighty vr6 wouldn't restrict you that much (unless you are thinking track use then prob 1.8T all the way). [1] And this is what I've read on the old ClubGTI forums from VR6 convert owners. [2] Go koni/eibach, I've got FK, german and up here in derbyshire its awful. Its a good suspension kit don't get me wrong, but it likes good roads, and round here, there isn't many. So on most roads I actually have to go slower than on standard suspension. -- Jon B real email to usenet at jonbradbury dot com |

Easily tuned to 230/280bhp depending on what version you start with, 350/400bhp needs a bigger turbo. Unless you go for an aftermarket ECU like I did the hardest part will be getting the OEM engine management to work as the immobiliser is linked to the ignition barrel, clocks and ECU. |

Hi Homer, Not saying that I'd do it but am intrigued and would atleast like to look into / cost the various tuning options. Any idea of cost and where to look for the 230/280/350/400 bhp out of the 1.8t (honestly I'm not trolling, just interested!). Regards Someone |

Awesome, Dubsport, Venom, JBS AutoDesigns, Revo, flick through copies of THe Golf. If you want proper answers to these sort of questions you'll probably be better suited in clubgti.com forums, more modders, more people who've done the conversions. -- Jon B real email to usenet at jonbradbury dot com |

Any idea of cost and where to look for the 230/280/350/400 bhp out of the 1.8t (honestly I'm not trolling, just interested!). Standard 180bhp 1.8T with K03S turbo will tune to 230bhp ish, Audi TT 220bhp version with K04 turbo will go to 280bhp. If you want more than that you'll need something like a GT28RS turbo for 350bhp or something a little larger (with more lag) for 400bhp. If you're going to put a 1.8T into a Mk2 Golf or a Corrado yourself with an aftermarket ECU it'll cost you around £3.5k, a bit less if you use the OEM ECU but not nearly as easy. If you're wanting a bigger turbo then you'll be around another £1300 on top of that. |

I was just intrigued at the idea of 350 bhp out of a 1.8 :-) I had a read of the clubgti forums as suggested, some rare old beasts in there! Cheers Someone |
