VW Golf 2.0 GTi MK4 Rough Engine

I have a 2003 Mk4 Golf GTi (2.0 8valve) that often sounds rough when
started. It sounds a bit like the exhaust is blowing and a bit like a
diesel. The exhaust has been checked and is fine. Two VW dealerships have
checked it and plugged it into the diagnostic machine and both have said
there is nothing wrong with it.

It is becoming quite annoying. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it.
