Default Adjusting gear linkage on MK3 golf

Hi

Anyone have any hints/tips on adjusting the cable gear linkage on a 1997
golf gti 16v. Sometimes have difficulty engaging 1st and 5th gear.
How easy is it to do?

Take it to the dealer as there is a special tool to lock the lever in
place so that the proceedure can be carried out.

Check the oil level and there are modified oils for easier shift changes
mainly 1 to 2nd.

Is it not a DIY job then?
How much will the dealer charge?
