Default Broken cam belt in Sharan 1.9TDI - Help !

Hi,

Need some guidance, VW Sharan 1.9TDi Auto (MPV) made 1999, the cam belt
suddenly snapped while driving on the motorway - obviously all power was
lost. Before I get suckered by the local garage, does anyoneknow if the
valves or pistons would have been damaged ? or is it just a simple cam belt
replacement ?.

TIA

Unless you are very lucky, there will probably be damage. The cambelt
change is a bit tricky anyway, especially given the access in a Sharan.

yes they bend - did you look at the service intervals for belt
replacement when it was due? No obviously!

Not always the case, my dads cambelt went last year on his 944, less
than 2 years and less than 20,000 after the last cambelt replacement.
The interval on those is about 5yrs, 40,000 miles. Not a cheap fix and
even after the stripdown no clues to what caused it to fail so early
(and yes a quality belt had been used too).

Without the facts to hand then that's a bit harsh given the propensity of
VAG engines (including diesels) to lost their cambelts through one means or
another. Many have done so before the specified interval.

I believe there is a "class action" going on in the USA about it at the
moment.

However, if the OP has indeed exceeded the specified CB change interval
mileage then although one can have some sympathy with his current
predicament, it would be, as you indicate, his own fault & "tough".

From the number of of these I have seen with broken belts (6) 5 of them
have had bent valves. All of them have exceeded the cam belt
replacement intervals.

Thats reality though - whilst still operational people or garages don't
bother to do a FULL service which includes changing the belt.

Most belts carry a warranty against breakage.

Ok well no need to be an arse and impollite over things. Yes the
majority of the time cambelt failure is due to not changing the belt,
but sometimes they just fail, sometimes the water pump siezes taking
them out, sometimes another bit goes (I know on the 944 16vs there is
some plastic shoe the cambelt runs over and when that goes it takes your
cambelt out for eg).
