Default Ticking 8v 1.8

Hello fellow VW owners!

My 1990 VW Golf with 89,000 miles (I'm from US) runs great but has a
loud ticking problem. I tried running a cleaner through the motor
before I changed the oil, but that only stopped it for about two weeks.
Any suggestions?

At idle? One of the valves on the fuel injection side ticks if you set the
idle screw a bit too low on my 8v Digifant (I presume you had Digifant in
the US?).

Probably a tappet that's a bit worn. The Haynes manual gives a test method.
Live with it, or change it!

BTW - no need to apologise for being from the USA. ;-)
We use miles here too (I assume that's why you mentioned it). It's only the
European mainland that use km. Never have understood why Australia gave up the
mile though - maybe their neighbours, largely former Dutch and French colonies
on the metric system, made it sense to change.

We changed measurements in industry and trade to metric, but the mile for road
travel has stayed - probably due to the cost of replacing all the signs.

All replies were great! The clock is not it, for sure (I've never
heard a digital clock that ticks! The motor does tick almost all
the time. Sometimes I hear it on the freeway. A local VW mechanic is
the one that suggested running the cleaner (and run it hard, he said).
I like the info about km vs miles. I always thought it was just US and
Hungary that used miles, etc. Problem with thicker oil is that when I
run it (20w50), the car seems to smell of burning oil sometimes...
coincidence? Again, on a scale of mechanical competence 1 to 10 (10
being high), I'm about a four... and learning.
All info is genuinely appreciated. I don't know what digifant is.
Sorry.

It's definately gonna be the tappets. Just replace them - its really easy
and they're quite cheap. If they've been ticking for ages you might need
to replace the cam too.
