Hi
I have a 2002 Golf Mk IV SE TDI PD 130 Estate Automatic Has just passed its first MOT without a problem. Over the last 2000 miles it has averaged 38 mpg. Is this good, bad, or indifferent for this car. Any suggestions as to what consumption one should expect, and how to get it if it is better than above? TIA Peter |

TIA Peter That seems a little bit high, but not too much. I have a manual Audi A3 110 TDi, and that does around 48-50 ish. The PD 130 will probably use a little more fuel than my 110, the estate MKIV will be a bit heavier, and the auto will rob you of a couple of MPG, so it's probably not too bad. If you do short trips/town driving that would explain the rest. |

These figures are for a very different car and for petrol, so no point in using
the actual figures, but the comparison of mph and mpg is still pretty much valid. mph mpg 55 38 60 37 65 33 70 31 75 27 80 22 I'd be expecting around 10 mpg more than that for mine, but maybe I drive my lower powered Mk 3 TDi differently. Faster cruising and rapid acceleration are really the only times yours should use more fuel than mine though. Auto, air-con (climate control), all those electrical gadgets increase the fuel consumption. -- Dave. UK VW Type 3 & 4 Club http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/ |

The official combined figure for your car is 42 mpg and you're unlikely to achieve that. The auto robs quite a bit of mpg as the combined figure for the manual is 51mpg! HTH |

Thank you all for your comments.
So 38 mpg isn't too bad for an automatic, but it would be nice to if people have experienced anything better. Incidentally this afternoon driving at about 50 mph on a long straight flat road according to the computer I was doing 82 mpg, turned on the aircon, and it dropped to 48mpg, switched off the aircon and the the numbers started scrolling up again, but I ran out of flat road. I expected a penalty for aircon, but that did seem pretty dramatic. Peter |

When aircon is on it adds loadto the engine hence fewer mpgs as does lights and other heavy electrical loads. with a more powerful engine the difference is less, on my last two cars the difference with aircon on was 2-3 mpg. 2 Wednesday s ago I drove from Birmingham to Kidderminster I used the cruise control and didnt go above 45 mph, the outbound journey the computer showed and average fuel useage of 50,8 mpg and the return 49mpg, not bad for a 2litre petrol turbo ;-p saying that on a run to Preston at proper motorway speeds and the odd sprints the return was just over 40mpg. |

On my regular run to work 17 miles , 25 minutes, I find having the climate control on makes no noticeable difference ie under 2 mpg. I get an average 50mpg, lower in winter than summer. On my journey to the Lakes (A66) from N Yorks I average 55mpg on the return trip. True if you have the aircon on full blast continuosly it will have a significant effect but when do we need this amount of cooling in the UK ? Golf Mk4 115hp TDI Robert royall at which net |

Never noticed any difference in MPG with climate on Auto or Off when we had our V5 Bora. Better for the system to leave it on Auto all the time. |
