Default mk1 golf not idling

Bit of a problem with my mk1 Golf GTi.

It'll start ok and run fine as long as I keep some pressure on the
throttle, but as soon as I lift off it stalls.
I've checked the airways and can't find any leaks, the cold start valve
had a snapped wire so i've fixed that but it made no difference.

The car was running fine last week, but getting into in yesterday it
just wouldn't idle, it makes no difference if the car is cold or warm.

Any ideas? It was outside during the recent bad weather, so I thought
it could be water ingress, but a liberal coating of wd40 on the ht
leads hasn't helped.
The distibutor looks to be in good condition and the ht leads and spark
plugs were new about 2000 miles ago.
