Default Looking to buy Corrado

My Campaign GTI is just about becoming too rattly for an everyday car and I
want to garage/rebuild it and get an everyday replacement.

I've always fancied a Corrado but can anyone advise as to best model to get?
I've set my budget at £4K and have seen several private VR6s for around this
price. I'm 39 with Full NCD so insurance isn't too much of a problem.

Should I go for 2.0 16v, VR6 or G60 as I don't really fancy the same 1.8 as
in my GTI in a heavier car?

TIA

PS anyone looking for a cheap 911?

Buy a VR6 as you'll always think to yourself you should have spent the
extra on one instead of buying the others. :-)

Expensive to run (27mpg tops), some parts are silly money and the
police know all too well what they are and how fast you are probably
going. ;-)
I'd have another tomorrow.

I like your style, sir!

Expensive to run (27mpg tops),

I don't get a lot more than 30 out of my GTI anyway, plus I don't have a
long journey to work, just a slow one!

The '6 would certainly be my favourite - but I was really wondering whether
there are any particular reliability issues/known problems with any
particular variant?

Hmmm well this is just my personal opinion but I always thought that
the VR6 ran too hot under bonnet for it's own good.
They didn't fit a double rad/fan setup for no reason. Just seemed to
"cooking" itself at times.

Some parts are hideously expensive being specific to the car.

Tyres last no time at all no matter how expensive they are, spent a
paltry £400+ on a set when I bought it.

However all this is worth it when you are being tailgated on the
motorway due to a slower car in front, quietly drop down into 4th gear
then wait until the car in front pulls over, then leave the idiot
behind you for dead as you pull away from 70/80 upto 120 etc. :-)

If I'd not got stopped for speeding the one time I did I'd still have
it. Still cost me a two month ban. ;-)

Wow, coincidence, I've also got a campaign Golf (a mk2) and bought a Corrado
VR6 Storm a couple of months back.

I'm getting about 26ish mpg around town, but managed to get an amazing 34mpg
on the way back when I bought the car! Of course, I was doing about 55mph.

I initially considered a G60, but the newest ones are k-reg, and you've
always got the supercharger reliability to worry about...
I wouldnt even bother with the 16v's, what's the point of having such a
beautiful coupe, if it lacks the grunt under the bonnet?
The VR6 can have problem with noisy timing chains (which if not sorted out
will wreck the engine) after 100k+ miles, this can cost about a grand to
sort out!! Some VR6's happily do 150k miles on their original chains, so
you never know.

The one I bought has low-ish mileage - about 80k and the chains dont make
any noise at all.
And the sound of the engine at 4k rpm is fantastic

The only problem might be your budget of £4000. For this price you can get
top G60's, but any VR6's are likely to be troublesome. The good/looked
after ones go for at least £5000.

You should check out the corrado forum for questions about all the corrados,
or even good ones for sale:

http://the-corrado.net/

Good luck!

I believe the G60 is fine as long as the supercharger isn't neglected. A
rebuild of the charger is something like £400.

That'll probably be because the more expensive the tyre, the softer the
compound and the higher the level of grips. Get cheap nasty crap and
they'll last for twice as long, however can't guarantee the
effectiveness of holding that corner at the same speed as the rest of
the car is capable of, which could cost more than the difference between
the ****e and the good tyres.

More like from £400 [1] but you have to be careful the charger hasn't
been butchered by a previous rebuild, I know a G60 owner that ended up
spending £2k on a new charger from VW as the old one wasn't really
rebuildable. However you can pick up a used charger for rebuilding a lot
less, he just had a habbit of doing things the extra mile on his car.
