Valve stem oil seals or piston rings main suspects I would say, I'm
inclined to say the latter but could be wrong. If you are using more
than a litre per 1000 miles time to start looking for a new (used)
engine, or rebuild the current one but it could be very pricey

I'd go for rings on the cruising evidence, too.

Does it belch out smoke when started after sitting for a while?

Black smoke is usually fuel, ie very rich mixture, oil smoke is normally
blue. I had a gasket break down and let oil leak into one of the bores
resulting in clouds of blue smoke. Hope I'm not confusing the issue.
