Hi,
I hope this is the right newsgroup! I have fallen in love with the Caravelle/Transporter (1994ish on, slopy front shape) 8 seat minibus. Anyone got one for sale? I really want a diesel but I have come across a petrol (2.5) with engine trouble. Is it possible to change the engine to a diesel unit? Is this an easy swop or is there a lot of work to do with engine mountings, driveshafts, engine management, etc. Would I also need to change the tank over or can I use the original petrol tank?? Also 1.9 or 2.4 (2.5?) which is best and why? I'm not a speed freak but I'd like to get there in reasonable time!!) I have not owned or worked on VWs before let alone the Caravelle so any clues, tips, pitfalls etc about the bus in general would be really appreciated. Thanks for any help, Graham |

The nearest equivalent Diesel to the 2.5 litre 5-cylinder petrol is the 5-cylinder 2.4 normally aspirated Diesel. It is solid and reliable, if plodding. The 2.5 TDI will also fit but you will need the wiring loom, fusebox, instrument panel and steering lock/key and an expert to configure them to work together. This task is not to be underestimated. Personally, I would find a good used 2.5 litre 5-cylinder petrol engine and do a direct swap, with an LPG conversion to give the economy of the Diesel. None of these options are cheap, and the value of the finished job may not equal what it costs. |
