Default MK2 Driver Best Economy

I recently did a trip of 323 miles in my beloved golf mk 2 1.6 driver
at a steady 70+/-5 I managed 51.23mpg, is this a rare thing to get MPG
like this? cos other, later, more 'efficent' cars I've owned haven't
come close.

technaically,
golf driver 1.6
weber conversion (34dtml i believe)
no front box on exhaust(sorry for earlier post it sits in the centre
of the car!)
tyre pressures F/R 32/30 (185/60/14 ecsta's)
load = me 79Kg,roughly 5kg of clothes,2cans of redbull,1 packet of
lemon bon bons and 3 cd albums.
mileage was all motorway

Funn y I bought a Saab 9000 with 180k miles on clock and it regularly gives
40 + on such a drive actually better than my mk2 "chipped" gti

I've never got more than 37mpg from my
Golf Mk2 CL 1.6 automatic 1989
Pierberg 2E2 carb (standard).
But a couple of weeks ago I discovered that a one-way valve in the vacuum
hose to the draw-down unit was fitted the wrong way round. Not being the
first owner, I guess that the carb has been adjusted to compensate for this
valve error and has been running too rich. Anyone experienced this?

I used to have a driver 1.6 with the weber. I used to only get about
36mpg on a run, 32ish about town, but I do have a heavy right foot.

As A comparion I've just bought anothe Driver a 92 1.6 total
standard, healthy 2e2, although it does have a rev counter, which
freaked me out. going to run this for a while and see if I can re
create the 51 run. If any one wants a driver I'll accept others on
either for the right money,

90 1.6 driver (spec in orig post)MOT/Tax August, Dark Met Blue
92 1.6 Totally standard MOt oct,tax march, recent
cambelt/clutch/4tyres Mars Red

Both are five doors and carry some non-VWSH

Hi Rob
I just stumbled on this newsgroup and read your message. I've got a
1990 Mk II Golf Driver 1600. Totally standard. It's been so reliable
I've never wanted to part with it and have kept it now for 14 years -
Never any bother passing it's MOT just sails through each time - The
mileage I've always seemed to get with it has remained constant over
the whole time. I fill it up each time from the red mark around 41
Litres and click the trip counter. On average all kinds of motoring
it religeously returns 300 miles before plonking another 41 Litres in
and that's not to mention I still open it up now and again to full
belt on the motor way 105 mph some times 110 if you open the back
window and fart....I tried one of the Mk IV's recently and preferred
mine. I also tried one of the new polo's and didn't like it.

my email is
if you wanna reply as I doubt I'll
ever find my way back to here again once I click it off. )

Cheers Tom.

hi guys

did a trip to welkom here in south africa a few months back (to go watch the
south african
leg of the motogp) with 4 guys in the car and all the crap that they took
with them (which was enough to warrant the replacement of the rear shocks
after the trip ) . The trip
was about 2500 KM's in total . My 1600 mk2 is a stock standard carburetted
motor
with about 240 000km's on the clock. never been overhualed.

at a average speed of 140km/h with a max speed of 170km/h we did the whole
trip
on 197 litres of fuel and i still had more than half a tank left at the end
of the trip
that equates to a fuel economy of about 12 km/l , which i think is quite
good
for such a load at such a speed. about 2000 km's of the trip was on
97 octane, and the rest on 93 octane.

yup, mk2's are the ****

and after 240 000 km/s on the clock i stil get 0-100km/h in way under 9
seconds flat !

Regards,
tanuki

I think your speedo overreads a bit. 0 - 100 in under 9 seconds? NO WAYS.
I also have a 1600 CSL 1986 in my household and it will never do 0 - 100
under 9 seconds. But I know that my speedo overreads quite a bit.
