Hi, just dropping in from one of the other uk.cars groups.
I've got a question about my Golf GTI. It's a 1990 Mk II 5dr with big bumpers, and appeared to be reasonably original. I'm a little suspicious of it now, as I'd been going to sell it, and I've discovered the speedo is wrong! The rest of the dash seems correct - the rev counter redlines at 6.250, the MFA computer is right, the odometer lines up, the speed appears to be accurate (3,000 RPM is about 63mph - I think that's right for the GTI, but again I'd like to know, as the gearbox was replaced just before I got it. It's certainly quick enough). The temperature gauge doesn't work correctly due to the wiring being a mess - I've been told that this model of GTI engine has a plastic component in the waterline where the temp sensors are, and this has been replaced with an earlier metal one with two sensors and the wiring 'modified' (heh) accordingly. However, the speedo only goes up to 120. As far as I can tell, a Mk II GTI should go to 140 (even though the top speed is well under). I'm not especially worried about the car's originality although I probably paid more for it on the basis that it had under 100,000 miles - I bought it on condition and it hasn't let me down, (I knocked a side trim off one of the wheel arches being careless, and the paint and panelwork was completely original - it has been sprayed, but I can't find evidence of bodywork, and it's red and fading so I'm assuming someone has tried to spray the most faded areas). I'm just wondering if it would be worth trying to replace the speedo, or if I've got the wrong dash (and if so, how come it has the right MFA computer and seemingly the right 'design'). There is a chance the poor thing has been clocked (I'm beginning to form an intense dislike for any car that has ever spent time in Newcastle, and will probably make future sellers sign a statement that the car has never visited anywhere near Gateshead), so I'm guessing that the car isn't worth the £1,300 I'd advertised it for, and probably nearer 700 or 800. Richard, whose past VWs have been a grotty Mk II GTI 3dr that cost £90, a Jetta Syncro, and a Q-plated GTI 16v, so I don't have much to go on by way of real, proper GTIs. -- 306 Cabrio - reliable, topless, fast - yet boring... |\ _,,,---,,_ Citroen XM Exclusive - still awaiting repairs. /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;, VW Golf GTI 5dr - lovely, relaxing. There are the two computers, aren't there. Mine is the kind that has two reset positions. Richard (off to order a new ns window regulator. The worlds most basic GTI - no central locking, no electric windows. Just nice, basic transport. Except for the P alloys. I know they're wrong for the year, it probably had steel wheels!). -- 306 Cabrio - reliable, topless, fast - yet boring... |\ _,,,---,,_ Citroen XM Exclusive - still awaiting repairs. /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;, VW Golf GTI 5dr - lovely, relaxing. writes Hah! mine has no central locking, no electric windows, no stereo and no rear seats :-P Do Siroccos count? (goddam spelling. This is the one my computer thinks is right). So, I looked at my dash. My car was registered 01-08-1990, is a big bumper, but has a VDO dash. I know VW were good for using up bits (I remember my dad's 1987 Passat Topic - they were meant to be 1.8s, but they ran out of 1.8 engines so he ended up with a 2.0GL5 engine in it!). I'll be really, really relieved if that's what the difference is! I *think* there were 2 makes of speedo fitted to the Golf II gti. Both went up to 120. I've seen 3, an 89, 90 and 91. All vdo. All 120. There are the two computers, aren't there. Mine is the kind that has two reset positions. Well, one computer, 2 'logs' - trip and cumulative. Same on all of them, again AFAIK. Just to confuse matters, my '85 8v has the original speedo and it goes to 230 KM/H..(142? MPH).. VDO one, with the silly (non functioning) economy gauge in.. -- Pete M.
