We have a 16V 1.8 Corrado.

It goes great, but every so often, usually on a long run, it burbles
and dies. It can keep going on very low throttle, but if you put the
hoof down, it dies.

Cu stop by the wayside for a few minutes and them start and drive
off.

We have had the lift pump, filter and the fuel distributor replaced
(it was crudded up), but this has not cured it.

My own thoughts are something like a sweetie paper in the tank, which
would be a pain to fix, but has anyone any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

Jacques

Remember this one?

for future reference.

Well after checking everything it boiled down to the lift pump in the
tank not doing the business. (It was jammed and burnt out).

The reason it took so long to diagnose was that I had been told by one
of the VW garages who had looked at it that they had checked the damn
lift pump and replaced it....which they had not. *******s.

I have to say that if you take anything older than 5 years old to a VW
garage and a spotty mechaninic looks at it, don't expect much. They
are clueless.

After a long run in my Mk2 8v Gti followed by an hour left in the blazing
sunshine, the car started but would not go above ~1500 rpm or would die but
below this, all was ok. Stopped and switched off then restarted but same
happened when revved up. Stopped engine again and took petrol filler cap off
which was accompanied by a hiss of air entering fuel tank. Has been fine
since. Garage reckon it might have been something to do with the petrol
filler cap not allowing air into tank so creating a vaccum as petrol is
drawn into engine. Don't know if this was the case but all well since then.

FWIW I think the lift pump is often overlooked. I had an AA guy look over my
digifant GTI. He didn't believe that it had 2 pumps. After an hour of him
crawling all over and ruining my battery I showed him the wiring diagram
from Bentley's. Only then did he diagnose one of the fuel pumps. Einstein.
