Have just bought a VR6. It has 127k so was cheaper (I think) at £3300. Had
to put a radio on it and a new alarm system as the old immobilsier had been bridged out. I'm happy with the car, but I think it is misfiring at some point, it sounds a bit 'up and down' at higher revs. Any ideas, and where should I get it tuned etc? Is there a Haynes manual for the car? I read a posting that said there is a bush on the gear selection lever that can be replaced - it is certainly notchy on my car. Cheers in advance for any info/ideas. |

Be careful where you go with it at the price I assume you won't be going near the main dealers. I took mine to a local VW specialist except mine was the only VR6 Corrado they ever saw ans they were a bit crappy at fixing anything that wasn't "broke". Had a problem where it would rev/miss in a similar way and even though they had the car for days on end they never fixed it, same when the spark plug leads were shorting onto the block. Mark S. |

What year is your VR?
Just that earlier models had a distributor, and later ones a 'coil pack', obviously if its an earlier model, a missfire could be down to dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads and/or plugs, later models replace dizzy with coil pack, but I think a coil pack going would show up at lower revs as well. If your located in SE London, I would recommend Sanspeed in Standard Road, Bexleyheath, they have a full Bosch diagnostic set-up and can also read VW fault codes from the ECU. Basically take it to a Bosch Tune speciallist, who should find any problems. Dont forget there's 6 plugs and leads, so replacing them could cost a fair sum, if the leads have had it, you could do worse than replacing them with 'Magnecore' leads, which are supposed to be pretty good. Haynes don't do a manual for the VR, but the one for the MKIII gives a fairly good idea on some things. Peter Russek Publications (www.russek-manuals.com) do a Pocket Manual for the earlier VR6 engine with a few wiring diagrams which is pretty good, no photographs tho, just drawings, but very technical. Or you could go for a Bentley Manual, but I think they're more American orientated tho. If its a 3 door model, check (with the doors open!) under the door rubbers along the sill about a foot in front of the door pillar for rust (!), or a 5 door check the rear door hinges/ grommet where the electrics come from the body for rust also. If you ever notice an oily smell after some high speed cruising, its the breather pipe dripping some oil onto the exhuast manifold where the breather joins the throttle body inlet pipe, undo them all and rejoin them with some Blue Hylomar to stop any future leaks. The VR gear change is not the slickest in the world (being cable change is partly to blame perhaps?) and mine occasionally crunches with only 57K on the clock, but I have heard there is a bush that wears and can cause problems. Keep the oil and filter changed at regular intervals, mine usually gets a 6 monthly change, and use genuine VW or Bosch/Mann filters, and VW Synta (silver container) oil and it should give you a good few years of happy motoring )HTH AndyR VR6 |

Thanks for that. I live in Cheltenham so I'll have to find a specialist
around here. It's a 1995 car, not sure what ignition system it has but i'll have a look tomorrow. John L "AndyR" wrote in message ... What year is your VR? VR6's love good petrol - mine has 132K miles on it & has run on Shell Optimax since I bought it with 82K on it. The normal supermarket sh*t will make it misfire under load / high revs. Good quality plug leads are also a must, especially if you have coilpack ignition. Is there a Haynes manual for the car? I read a posting that said there is a bush on the gear selection lever that can be replaced - it is certainly notchy on my car. I can highly recommend the B&M quick shift kit. Not cheap at £130(ish), but it removes all the sloppiness of the standard VW gearshift. It's also got a 1 million shift guarantee, which I take to mean "lifetime" ;-) |

My VR6 was similar. The fault was traced to a broken hotwire in the MAF.
Replaced it and the car is sweet, although not as sweet as my BMW 325i. Good luck! "John Lucas" wrote in message ... Have just bought a VR6. It has 127k so was cheaper (I think) at £3300. The rev problem I eventually put down to the garage altering something when they fixed the faulty radiator as it didn't happen before that and then when they fixed something else later on it went away. The shorting plug leads I didn't get to fix as I part exchanged the Corrado for a Polo before I went to court for speeding... Hideously expensive to run and maintain but I'd have another one tomorrow. :-) Mark S. |

Now when you say radiator repair - last owner just had a new radiator and a
hose put on the car. Link? I'll get it sorted. "Mark" wrote in message ... On Wed, 20 Aug 2003 21:28:35 +0000 (UTC), "John Lucas" wrote: Cheers, I assume it got fixed in the end though.
