To save me looking a 'T' at the dealership,... please could someone
check to see whether the manual aircon dials in the centre console of
an '02 1.8T should be backlit. Thought mine used to be,... but they're
not now.

Also,... if they are meant to be backlit, are the bulbs easy to change
or is it best to return to the dealer; only ask because recently had
to remove the front bumper to change a sidelight bulb and don't want
another long(ish) job.

I wouldn't be using that dealer to replace a bulb if they had to remove the
bumper to replace a side light bulb.

The manual a/c is illuminated.
The bulb can be accessed by pulling off the fan control knob. The bulb is
located in the centre of the switch.

On a similar note, can anyone confirm whether the ESP button on a '02
MkIV should be backlight.

I get a light on the speedo when the ESP is not active but the button
itself never seems to illuminate.

Yep, the ESP button should be backlit (in red) though, if mine's
anything to go on, the light doesn't change colour when pressed; thus
the only visual indication that it's off is the symbol in the speedo.
