Default Solex 2B2 Carb Replacement

The carb on my Golf cabrio is playing up at the moment - so it looks

Unfortunately, it's going to cost £140 + VAT to do, and I was wondering
if there is any alternative (and more common) carb I can replace it
with?

Cheers,

Are you sure it's a 2B2 and not the (in)famous 2e2?
The 2e2 is actually a good carb, but a pig to set up right (and is
complex). Some regulars here know them quite well. I've managed to get a
fair knowledge of them, and Dave Hall seems to know them very well
indeed. What is wrong with your carb?
I looked he
http://www.webcon.co.uk/cgi-bin/www....er_carbs.setup
and searched on Golf. They don't have a replacment for the 2B2, and I'd
have have expected a 2e2 to be honest. What engine does your Golf have?
The Webers are a good replacement for the 2e2 if that's what you have.
They run at about £170 new though- try http://www.eurocarparts.com. If
your solex/pierburg really is knackered then it sounds like a good idea.
It might be worth trying to fix first though.

How can I tell?

I have the Haynes manual in front of me, and my carb looks like a
2B2......

Of course, I have no idea if the engine is originally from this car -
it's highly likely that it's from a Scirocco (the exhaust manifold
doesn't match up to any standard Golf exhaust systems.....)

Cheers for the link - a replacement Weber looks to be about the same
price as the rebuild - could be the way to go!

Sounds like it could be Zenith 2B5 carb perhaps? they were on Sciroccos up
1982. Anyway, there is a Weber for both 2E2 and 2B5. I had one on a 1982
scirocco and it was very economical.

Could well be.

The 2B2 and 2B5 seem to be interchangable.

From the calls I made today, no-one seems to believe me that I have a
2B2 or 2B5....... keep wittering on about 1B something......

So - how to identify it? - It's got 2 'pots' so surely it _has_ to be a
2B2/5?

Yeah, the 1B3 - a single choke found on 1.5 Golfs and Sciroccos untill about
'83. If your engine is 1588cc I would say you have a Zenith 2B5/2B2 twin
choke (also found on old BMW's) and hazard a *guess* that a replacement
Weber for a 1980 Scirocco GLS would be what you're looking for as Sciroccos
and Cabriolets were both assembled by Karmann. Check the bolt fixing i.e 2
or 4 and whether it's auto or manual transmission before parting with money.
