Default Mk 2 8v Golf Gti speedometer

After having a new clutch installed in my 1989 8v Golf Gti (pb engine and
big bumper model), I have noticed that the mileometer and trip meter on the
VDO type have ceased to work. All other functions are ok (speedo, revs and
MFA). Told it might be where the cable connects to the speedometer has
broken. Any ideas? Asked around for price of second hand dial but need part
number first but don't want to dismantle unless I have to. Quoted part 533
957 033 M from ETKA but breaker says this is a Corrado number although
printout shows following

Model GO
Year 1989
MG 9
SG 57
Illus 239-00

Any thoughts or help very welcome.

Well the 16V Corrado used the normal 16V VW engine I think? So you'd
have to say it had a few parts the same as well.

Mark - There's loads of varients of clocks sadly but the Corrado never
shared any of them. It has a completly different arrangment and style of
clocks and a more rounded look too. The part code for the clocks is on the
bottom edge underneath the trip and clock adjustment - you need to remoev
the clocks to see it. It's a small white sticker and that's the code you
want. If you're still stuggling tomorrow with it I'll post the number from
mine (I removed two sets of clocks from two GTi Golfs this afternoon) I
don't think either of my clocks start with "533" - I think that's the wrong
number.

If you do need new clocks I'd recommend a scrappers or Ebay. Make sure all
indications are the same - Scirocco clocks work too if you get really stuck
(They're not ideal as they are missing the side tabs that hold the clocks in
on a GTi - you don't really need them as other mounting points are
available...it just keeps it as standard as it should be)

If you're unlucky enough (or lucky if yours DID work) to own an ecomomy
edition dash (Right in the middle at the top is a yellow arrow and a needle
to give approx MPG)it's very hard to source them - likewise 140mph on an 8v.
I believe though your clocks are the common ones - 120mph, temp in centre
top and these are quite common.

They're not that difficult to fit - dash does need removal but once you've
done it once....it's a 2 second job! Mail me if you'd like help with that!

I've found these for you - Ebay job!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ategory=98 89

Hope this all helps!

Regards

Michael

Heh, you think that's unlucky, mine's got the economy gauge AND a 220 KM/H
speedo... (136 MPH)

by the way, intermittant temp gauge, works when it's cold and damp out..
hmm.

Do you have any idea how the economy stuff works?

The economy gauge on my Mk1 has never worked to my knowledge, and the MFA
gives only 12/14 mpg average, although I've done several tank topping
exercises that indicated a good 30mpg!

I understand it's something to do with vacuum and there is a plastic pipe
that goes from the inlet manifold thorugh the bulkhead - can that get block
ed or anything?

TIA

Jeff

too much drink yesterday and now suffering.....and up at 4 in the
morning....ah well...

The MFA can start to suffer when it's blocked but it's worth checking it's
connected at all. With a rather inpressive 99MPG you have a mighty ecomonic
Golf or the hose has come off altogether. It's a tough plastic hose about 3
mm and a push fit.

With a 99 reading I'd say it's not connected properly - either at the dash
end (easy not to connect if the dash has been apart for anything) but with
a perm. low reading I'd say it is blocked or the clocks are at fault. I
presume the performance is still ok?

Back to bed now I think......
