Default warning light

Mark 2 GTi 8v (92)

I've got my warning light flashing on the dash the (water temp one) but the
water temp gauge is fine as is the oil temp from the multi function display.

What does this light actually mean, is it temp or coolant level.

I Think the expansional vessel is leaking around the filling cap as I can
hear a hissing noise when the car is hot and the bonnet is up.

Any help for this vague description of my problem would be greatfully
received.

Cheers Rich

its the coolant level. make sure the seal on the expansion
bottle cap isn't cracked/creased - they're a bugger for it.
