Jon B waffled on in a quite bewildering manner to produce...
AndyR wrote: Probably wheel bearing, if like sons MKII, which had the bearing done a few months before the CV joint as he had same noise as you guys. Bearing made noise all the time, but changed when taking corners. CV joint was making a 'clonk' when just pulling away- forward and reverse, and they can also make a rumbling noise when you drive and try full lock in either direction. AndyR VR6 Yeah I'd say it sounds like wheel bearing, mines doing a v faint droning now here n there. Paid last year £60 for my other front wheel bearing and got quoted £80 last month for a new outer CV joint that turned out to be the tyres jst catching on the arb at full lock. Front wheel bearings for a Mk2 Golf are only about £22 each, I've done both on my Mk2. Right pain to do an all. Beware of noise tranference through the car as well, I changed 3 wheelbearings before I discovered it was the "other" one. Sounded for all the world like O/S/R... changed the back ones.. still there.. N/S/F it turned out to be.. Bloody thing. Pete M |

I know this one for sure!!
I went to hell and back trying to get mine fixed because half the places i went to tried to tell me it was the cv joint, and the other half either the gearbox or something else... I could have thrown a lot of money away. Basically it will be one of the FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS. Bad CV joints go clunk and judder a lot, wheel bearings whine and grumble and sometimes judder as well. Bad front ones stop sounding bad (or get worse) when you go around a corner. I dont know which side will be bad on yours (cant work out the physics in my head) - the garage should be able to work that out (surely). I really wouldnt try and change it yourself because its a nightmare job, even for a garage. Cost me about 80 pounds i think - money well spent considering all the hassle i went through. Going round a left hand bend the weight of the car gets thrown onto the right hand wheels, so if the noise gets worse it's the right bearing that's faulty. If the noise reduces, it's the left one that's faulty. It can still be pretty hard to tell whether it's the front or rear though. Generally rears tend to "drone" and fronts to "rumble" - bit subjective though! |

Cheers, Dan G. Yeah when I did mine last year, the front wheel bearin had been dronin for a short while, booked it in for the Tuesday, but over the weekend before did the top mounts, which then caused the wheel bearing to knock. Took it down to Mr Clutch (with hindsight bad mistake) where it was booked into, who said they didn't think it was that but the front arb bushes. But couldn't do them till next week. Told em to F off and do the wheel bearing, "But theres nothing wrong with it". Funny that having talked them into changing it, the banging went and it was a month or two before I got round to the bushes as they were fairly ok -- Jon |

The outer wheel hums more when turning if it's the front wheel bearing.
Turning left for more noise means the right side, and vice versa. It's the 'weight transfer' that loads the bearing more. -- Dave.
