Default Headgasket blew :o(

I think he meant the service indicator which is just a reminder to have an
oil service. It comes up in place of the trip counter and goes off after 30
seconds or so. If this was the first time it came on, I doubt it has
anything to do with the failure.

Yesterday my 1999 Passat 1.9 TDi decided it was going to die on me.
In spectacular fashion, I might add.
In the morning, the service OIL indicator came on but went away
after half a mile or so.

your oil light came on and you carried on driving?

Yes she did but filled it up with oil! The engine then "Dieseled" due to the
residual engine heat and remaining compression in the block being enough to
compress the fuel mix.

The engine stopped due to the head gasket being blown! Thus a reduction in
compression.

The news from the garage is that it has a blown gasket, burnt / knackered
valve(s) and pistons(s) all this on a car with only 110K on the clock
(that's mile)
