Mk III Golf 1.6 Cutting out by
Neil Jowsey
Hiya,
I have a 1998 1.6 CL Golf MkIII that has a strange occasional cutting out
fault that's got me stumped. Engine is an AFT.
The engine will occasionally just cut out on me, just dies, no
stuttering, no warming, just stops. First thing I see is the rev counter
drop to zero. Then I realise the power steering's got heavy and I'm
coasting :-( I can't remember the state of the ignition...

Golf Mk3 misfire at steady speed (long) by
stan
Hello group,
Sorry about the length of this post but I hope someone has the time to
read it all!
Our family Mk3 Golf 1.8CL estate (ADZ engine) has developed a misfire
this weekend which seems to occur at a steady throttle opening and at
irregular intervals before clearing itself and running well again.
We've had a few problems in the wet weather this winter which has

Knocking steering - any advise, please by
WolfWilf[_2_]
At the last MOT of my 2000 2.0 Cabrio, I had a warning that the top steering
mounts were showing signs of play. I'm now getting a knocking from the
steering when turning from lock to lock and at low speeds. The car had a
new steering rack 20k ago, so I'd like to think it's not that. Would worn
top mounts cause the noise? Any other hints as to what it might be? Advice
and thoughts...

Golf Mk2 Driver 1800 Mpg + clutch question by
benpost
I've got a 1992 1.8 litre Driver with 230k miles on the clock!
I mostly go to work and back which is a 24 mile round trip along an A
road so I usually go at a comfortable speed 50/60. The last few times
I checked Ive got 29mpg.
However in the past I've recorded 36 mpg and also worse, 26mpg.
No work has been done on the car except for a basic service and mot.
Apart from adjusting the mixture...

Golf Mk IV driver's door switch? by
Angus Manwaring
Hi,
I've had an annoying electrical problem on my Golf Mk IV TDI's driver door
for a while.
The door light doesn't illuminate when the door is opened, the alarm to
tell you that you've left your lights on (when the door opens) doesn't
sound, and the little graphic showing a door is open, does not display
for the driver's door.

Running Diesel engine on vegetable oil by
JungleBoy[_2_]
Can modern direct injection diesel engines run on vegetable oil ?
I read a Golf Plus brochure the other night. It indicated that the diesel
engine can only run on normal diesel fuel.
My old 97' Sharan TDI seems to run better with 5% to 20% SVO depending on
temperature.
Does anyone have any views on this subject ?

VW tow bar electrics - intermittent fast left indicator by
JungleBoy[_2_]
If you ever have a problem with intermittently fast indicators and the car
has a tow bar and electrics fitted then the culprit could be the relay unit
fitted in the wiring loom that drives the buzzer unit. This happened to me
recently. This problem seemed to confuse the VW mechanics who replaced all
the working indicator bulbs with new ones. In the end I took the car to a
tow bar specialist...

Making a spare key help by
Maxi
A friend has a golf s 2001 which doesn't have remote central locking just a
key to open the door.
He asked me if I could make a spare key for him as it only came with one key
and the SKC (secret key code) code on a bit of plastic.
I have VAG COM 504 which I gather is what I need to do this ?
I guess the firts step would be visiting the dealer to buy a key first off,
getting it cut at...

Passat rear window removal by
JohnHenry
I have a 2000 Passat and I'm having a problem removing the passenger side
rear window. I've removed the door panel and want to remove the inner panel
that the window regulator motor is attached to. It appears that the window
is attached to the plastic regulator part in one location. When the window
is lowered, the point of attachment to the plastic regulator part is visible
through an...

Best place to get an error code reader on a Sunday? by
Simon Finnigan
Hi all,
the Passat has decided that it`s a good idea to show the ABS, traction
control and flashing glow plugs, along with "Engine Workshop", after it got
a little bit damp in the rain today. My garage doesn`t open until Monday
and while ringing the owner at home would get him to open up for me, I don`t
want to annoy him - we all like time off work! So I want to get myself an
error code...

VAG-Com for 52 reg Passat? by
Simon Finnigan
Hi all,
just wondering if it`s worth getting VAG-Com for my 52 plate Passat. I`m
not a huge tinkerer, but would like to be able to activate any extra
features on this car - remote window rolling, doors locking as I start
driving, that kind of thing. Would this be possible using VAG-Com, and if
so does anyone have a decent site that has the relevant codings?
Also, any suggestions for...

Oil filter - service info by
James[_2_]
Been about a year since I last serviced the MK4 golf.
Went into GSF to buy all the bits, air filter, oil filter, oil, plugs,
pollen etc. And noticed the brand name MANN on the oil filter ...made in
Germany. Just wondering what the reputation is like of this part. Looks like
a good part to me. The guy said MANN are top notch OEM quality.
Just wondering if anyone knows anythin about them ?
I...

Lupo 1.0 EGR by
Chris Bartram
My neighbour asked me to have a look at his daughters Lupo with VAG-COM
after the CEL came on, so I've scanned it and got
1 Fault Found:
17852 - Potentiometer for EGR (G212): Implausible Signal
P1444 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
I've cleared it and we took the car for a bit of a blast (heh- a 1.0)-
it usually does short trips at lowish speed- and the error hasn't come
back yet.

VR6 Hot Starting Problems by
Alex Hopwood[_2_]
Corrado VR6 has recently starting stumbling badly after a hot start. Starts
OK but then the idle speed drops until it almost stalls at which point
something kicks in and the revs shoot up after which they start to die
again. This repeats maybe 3 - 4 times until all of a sudden the revs shoot
up and come back down to a normal idle after which everything is fine. If
you try and use throttle to...

What options for a spare key for a Passat? by
Dave[_7_]
We have a Passat 2.0 litre sport (petrol, 2002) but there is only one
key. What options are available for getting a second (spare) key? Apart
from throwing money at VW, who I assume will want an arm and a leg for a
key.
If one gets a blank key, can they be cut easily? Can they be programmed?
I'm aware sometimes these sort of things appear on eBay, but I've no
idea what is possible.
