What's it worth then? by Adrian
Hi Guys, Owned plenty of aircooled VW's in my teens and early 20's, went through the GTi, BMW, Porsche phase, eventually went back to my roots and got a bike (TL 1000 Suzuki) which I've had for the past 5 years. Brilliant. However, things have changed. Child No 2 means I need a car once more. Missus runs an efficient but dull Seat Leon, main family car. Got a couple of grand kicking about...

Exhaust for 1641 by howardusenet@googlemail.com
Hello Group! As you may know, the original engine in my 1303 suffered from knocking bearings so I have bought a decent AR-code 1300 to replace it with. The original engine was an AR-code 1300 that a previous owner fitted 1641 barrels and pistons too, along with a progressive Weber, new heads and a Monza 4-tip exhaust. The Weber was giving me awful fuel consumption, so I replaced it with a stock...

VW Westfalia Fuel efficiency by mcd_n@hotmail.com
Hi, I just purchased a LHD 1981 2.0l Automatic Westie. Having taken it on its maiden voyage around the countryside at the weekend, I was shocked to see how much petrol it got through. I know these vehicles are not the most economical on the road but I think around 25mpg is pretty much typical without being heavily loaded. I was getting about 15mpg at best! Any ideas on what I can do to sort...

Hot engine and difficult to tune by Howard Rose
The original 30PICT-1 carburettor in my 1966 1300 was leaking from the throttle shaft. It hasn't been running right for quite some time, and was getting low MPG. Now my 1303 is out of action, I need to get this sorted! The replacement 30PICT-1 carburettor was pulled from a 1972ish Beetle I found in a local scrapyard. The carb was fully dismantled and thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt with a new...

Converting a 1300 semi-auto engine to 1600 manual by Howard Rose
As you may have read in my previous post, the engine in my 1303 is suffering from knocking bearings, so is technically dead. As the car is a daily driver, the quickest, and more importantly - the cheapest - solution is to get a secondhand engine and swap them over. The car in question is a 1974/75 1303 (Super Beetle), the original engine is an AR code 1300 that a PO fitted with a 1641 kit less...
