What's the point of SORN then? by
Willy Eckerslyke
Being a daft bugger, I only realised yesterday that the tax disc on my
tax exempt Rover had expired last December. (MOT and insurance all up to
date). I've been using it every day, often passing the VOSA vans on the
Menai Bridges and not heard a murmur. It was a police woman checking the
cars in a local supermarket who finally pointed out my lapse. She was
dead keen on having it towed away...

Windscreen crack by
R D S
I have a crack in my windscreen with a stonechip in the middle.
It is on the passenger side, extends from the bottom of the screen, approx 5
inch long, to the passenger edge of the screen, approx 1 inch up.
Will I need to replace? Is it a MOT fail?

Bioethanol, new car fuel? by
vrakita@gmail.com
The principle fuel used as a petrol substitute for road transport
vehicles is bioethanol. Bioethanol fuel is mainly produced by the
sugar fermentation process, although it can also be manufactured by
the chemical process of reacting ethylene with steam.

Tyre sizes by
R D S
I have 215/40/17's* on a Mazda 626.
Cornering at speed makes me grin like a dickhead but I can't help feeling
the ride suffers considerably.
It looks like the normal size is 205/55/15.
Given that I can replace the wheels and tyres for less than I can refit the
wheels on the car for (and have a set of wheels to sell) it seems like this
is the sensible thing to do when replacements are...

I have been mostly driving in Ibiza... by
Tim..
A) Skoda Fabia 1.2 70 HTP- sounds ridiculous- like a cross between a sowing
machine at full chat and a ladies-pleasure implement!! Resplendent with cup
holders, and soft touch dash, quite surprisingly nippy, but works best over
4000rpm, sounds like it wants to rev to a million rpm, but progress hampered
by the rev limiter. boo. Comfy and cold a/c, tyres squeally at
making-progress-speeds....

Any views on Car Giant? by
David Wright
Prices seem reasonable on a number of 3-4 year old used that I'm considering
at Car Giant (White City, London) - anyone any experience of using someone
with (apparently) 5,000 cars in stock?
The "buying procedure" which seems to involve filling out enquiry forms,
calling at the collections centre at a pre-arranged time and calling first
to check your car is ready, seems a little over the...

Aircon and fuel economy - one for Dervman perhaps? by
SteveH
Mike P wrote:
Has anyone ever bothered to see which is more economical - driving on a
motorway at 75 with windows open or driving with windows up and aircon on?
Just curious..
I've tried aircon on and off at a constant speed, looking at the fuel
economy readout on the dash. It's such a small difference that you can't
measure it.

Electronic speed limiters: What if... by
Ed Chilada
It was GPS based (and let's assume it just works), and like was said,
it enforced you to do no more than the speed limit. 20 in a 20, 30 in
a 30. You get a different style number plate so that people behind you
will have a little more patience knowing that you're going as fast as
you can.
But what if.. as a result of you agreeing to being enforced to do the
speed limits in rural areas, it let...

Polish car mechanic? by
R D S
I can't bring myself to type how much I have just paid to have the clutch
sorted on our Multipla.
Oh the pain. It's gonna take some drink to stop that from keeping me awake
tonight.
Anyway, apparently the Poles are flooding into the country, doing everything
cheaper than our boys and everyone is going out of business. So if anyone
knows a Polish car mechanic in East Lancs please pass their...

Cars Being Photographed On Streets by
Stuart B
A friend of mine said that he saw a VOSA vehicle recently and all they
seemed to be doing was photographing passing cars without any means
odf stopping any and he wondered why .
Tax Discs came to mind but they have this info on a database anyway
and I thought it might be checking for SORN'd vehicles out for a drive
.. Seems the most likely. I also thought about cars being seen that
didn't...
