Best Focus sized car up to £2000 by Mike P
Hi All, bad car day today means I need to buy a Focus sized car up to about 2 grand sharpish. What motors should I be looking at? Needs to be a 5 door hatch and I would like it to be as new as possible. From what I can tell, a 2000/2001 1.8 petrol Focus looks about the best bet.. Cheers Mike

Advice.... Motability or buy my own.... by loopy livernose
ok, first and foremost, I am asking advice, not to have anyone make a decision for me.. so this is a kind of, what would you do in my situation scenario! I am coming to the end of a 3 year motability lease, and have worked out that, with deposit etc, my "run of the mill" Astra has cost me 7.5K over 3 years.. (plus fuel). and I know I could buy a brand new/nearly new car for similar...

Importing from Spain/Portugal by Adrian
Anybody done it? I'm looking at importing an older (c.70s/80s) car from Spain or Portugal at the mo - finding it should be the easy bit, through clubs, and the plan is to get a couple lined up for inspection, fly out, buy one, drive home. That's the easy bit, and I'm quite happy with the UK registration side, but is there anything awkward to bear in mind with the Iberian registration...

BMW 525 rear subframe bush how easy!!! by tick
Hi To All I have a BMW 525 tdi.1994 Which has failed a MOT on rear subframe bushes. Both sides. The bushes are near the outer sill. I have found out a special tool is needed for replacement. Do I stand any chance without the special tool and does the subframe have to be dropped/removed. The bushes are the size of a baken bean tin roughly!!!!!!!! As the tool costs £139 it is not worth me buying...

Driving without road tax. by R D S
I have bought a car and the log book hasn't come through. The car is currently untaxed. I have applied for the Logbook but this might take 6 weeks, then when I get it I will need to drive to the nearest DVLA because the taxation class needs changing. I use the car on occasion and intend to tax it as soon as I am able to, but a bloke was telling me that if I get pulled 'they' can take the car,...

Bubble's burst by Willy Eckerslyke
Our local scrap metal place is now paying 40 pounds per tonne, after a high of 200 a few months back. Anyone care to guess how much lower it's likely to go?

Toyota Yaris clock setting by Paul Giverin
Went to adjust the clock on my wife's Mk2 Yaris this morning but without much success. The display unit has a digital clock on top and a multifunction display below and one button referred to in the handbook as the "DISP" button. The handbook says to set the ignition to "on" and press the DISP button to make the hours flash on the clock. All this does is cycle through the multifunction...

OT: Recession by Sir Krustov
uk.media.tv.misc Ar 21 Oct 2008 19:43:59 GMT Sometimes I may go for a drive in the countryside and buy something like sacks of potatoes straight from farmers that sell from their farms, rather than supermarkets. Top quality farmer stock, and the money goes to the farmer not the supermarket. That does feel good.

Volkswagon spokesman raises sabotage questions about Jorg Haider's VWPhaeton by LOVE Europe HATE the EU
Nationalist party leader Jorg Haider may have been MURDERED, it was claimed last night. The makers of his Volkswagen Phaeton limo insist the motor is one of the safest in the world and should have survived the crash in Klagenfurt. The car giants yesterday sent its own experts to examine the mangled wreckage and search for signs it may have been SABOTAGED. VW spokesman Peter Thul claimed that...

Weird exhaust smell by Tim Downie
I was following a tarted up hatchback the other day and it was producing the weirdest exhaust smells. Definitely not diesel and I don't think it was down to a knackered cat. It smelt exotic & aromatic and made me wonder if someone was running their car on some sort of illicit petrol substitute (not that I know of any) or at least pepped their fuel up with something exotic. Not much of...

Quality of roadside recovery services by nadine
I've been looking through MoneySavingExpert and moneysupermarket.com for cheap breakdown and recovery cover for my 1997 Ford Probe. I don't do many miles but I drive 200 motorway miles round trip every few months to see my friend. So I need the "carry your car to destination" most of all. I get good prices for the following providers but I've got no idea what their reputation is. Is...
