Crashing into a friend - what's the chance of that? by R D S[_2_]
About 1/2 a mile away from home I noticed a badly damaged car at the side of the road. It is a certain write off, extensive front end damage. I recognise this car as one which belongs to a good friend of a neighbour of mine. I arrive home and also note a fair amount of damage on said neighbours car. It seems they have had a collision. How unlucky is that!

coasting in neutral by Stewart[_2_]
In to-days Daily Telegraph Honest John suggests that nothing is saved by coasting in neutral as against rolling in gear. I find that if I coast down a slight gradient in neutral then the consumption is shown as 99.9 mpg and the rev counter sits at 800 rpm. On the other hand if I roll down with the car in 6h gear but not driving then the fuel consumption is still shown as 99.9 mpg but the...

10 hour motorway truck curfew by Krustov
This one is for real folks . A think tank has come to the conclusion that motorway traffic needs to be spread out over the full 24 hour day to ease congestion . As trucks take up large amounts of motorway space - removing them from daytime traffic could only speed up and improve motorway traffic flow . Therefore , Trucks will be banned from motorways during the daytime and will only be...

Diesel engine, auto transmission? by Fred[_5_]
I've got an absolute maximum of £4,000 to spend on a car - but would prefer if I didn't have to use it all. It must be automatic because I have a problem with my left leg and find it difficult to keep pressing the clutch in our famous nose-to-tail, stop-start rush hour traffic, but because of the price of fuel I'd like a diesel engine. I know it costs more at the pumps but I should gain...

A quick question about parking by pearson.enclave@gmail.com
At my regular parking place at home I have space to park my Ford Focus with all 4 wheels on a gravel surface. The back left wheel is inches away from a lock block path but still on the gravel. If a buy another car with a longer wheelbase the left rear wheel will be on the lock block path several inches above the gravel surface. My question is : if 1 wheel is higher than the others and...

Sunday to become a car free day by Krustov
Plans are being drawn up by the government for sunday to become a (car free) day - apart from taxis and public transport . Greenhouse emissions in the uk will effectively be cut by one seventh at a stroke & other countrys have also shown interest in the scheme . Although a car driver myself - i'm quite in favour of this .

Focus 2000 Zetec TDCI 90 BHP by Jim[_3_]
Any opinions on these in the estate version. Am looking at one later, but so many people tell me the 90 BHP is a hound....I used a 90 BHP Golf for a number of years and didn't think it was too bad - but maybe these Ford engines aren't as good as a VAG one?

How much does increased fuel costs affect the cost of goods? by Dave[_8_]
There has been a lot of talk, here and elsewhere, about how fuel costs are pushing up the cost of goods, particuly food. Of course fuel costs affect the cost of goods in many ways, but what is concentrated on is the amount the HGV uses. So I thought I woud calculate how much it adds to the cost. I had to make up some of the relavent numbers, feel free to comment on them. I calculate it has...

Car runs on powered bombay mix by Krustov
Was reading elsewhere about a guy who has designed his own engine that runs on powdered bombay mix . Apparently , The powdered bombay mix burns at such a high temperture that a steam expansion chamber can produce the same amount of power as a 900cc petrol engine . The burnt ash from the bombay mix is dropped out of the bottom of the engine as you drive along via two 1mm fish net plates that...

Replace petrol tanker drivers - with monkeys by Krustov
Its not as silly as it sounds - for if a monkey can be trained to fly a plane - then they could easily be trained to drive a petrol tanker . Start them off in a simulator and then once they learn how to drive and dont crash into anything - then give them their class 1 licence .
